NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer fell on a late strike to Hawai'i 1-0 on Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field. The Rainbow Wahine found the the only goal of the night in the 81st minute. Riley Liebsack finished with six saves for CSUN in front of the goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bows came out quickly with Brynn Mitchell forcing a Liebsack save just 20 seconds into the match. Liebsack later stopped shots from Amber Gilbert and another from Mitchell after the 24th minute to help keep the game scoreless. Hawai'i though continued to pressure the CSUN defense, eventually finishing with eight attempts compared to five for CSUN in the first 45 minutes of action. The Matadors though were not without their own close calls at the net. In the 34th minute, Jordyn Canister nearly came away with the game's first goal as she got past her defender and sent an attempt from nearly 25 yards that banged off the crossbar. Cami Alarcon looked for the rebound off the Canister attempt but could not come away with a shot. Canister also missed wide right with eight seconds on the clock before halftime.
Â
Liebsack would make timely plays throughout the second half, posting three more saves in the period. In the 59th minute, Gilbert looked for the net on a header near the goal line, but Liebsack moved quickly to protect the net with her body for a save. Hawai'i would be denied by Liebsack again in the 77th minute on a shot from Tatum Porter and again in the 80th minute on a strike from Izzy Ayala.
Â
However, Hawai'i finally broke through not soon after. After a CSUN turnover near midfield, the Rainbow Wahine went on the attack leading to Porter striking the net from above the box for a 1-0 lead. CSUN looked for the equalizer down the stretch, eventually gaining a late chance from Ashly Torres following a corner kick, but the shot went high.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We knew it was going to be a very physical battle and we knew Hawai'i was going to bring a lot of pace up top. They have the most shots in the Big West, so we knew we had to defend really good and be prepared from distance, and unfortunately, they got one a bit toward the end of the game. It was a tough battle for us, I thought we had some moments, but we didn't put together the full 90 we were looking for."
