CSUN Cross Country Heads to NCAA West Regional on Friday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN cross country will compete at the NCAA West Regional at the Colfax Golf Course in Colfax, Washington on Saturday, November 15th. The women's 6k will start at 11:00 a.m. and the men's 10k will start at 12:00 p.m.Â

The CSUN men's team will have seven student athletics competing, which include Thomas Achten, Cesar Cuevas, Darrick Jacob, Jr., Ramiro Mateos, Ja'Patrick Smith, Kai Smith and Camilo Torres. On the CSUN women's team, five will compete at the NCAAs, which include Sakura Divecchio, Savannah Ganter, Leann Hamilton, Ami Jacobson and Elin Markarian.
Other schools competing include Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, California, CBU, CSUN, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Hawaii, Idaho, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, Pepperdine, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, San Diego, San Diego State, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Seattle U, St. Mary's, Stanford, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, UNLV, USC, Utah Tech, Washington and host Washington State.

LAST TIME OUTÂ
The Matadors competed in the 2024 Big West Championship on Saturday, Nov. 2 at UC Riverside's Ags Ops Course. Both the men's and women's side saw new personal records set. The men's team finished ninth with 261 points in the 8k while the women's team was 10th with 305 points in the 6k.

On the men's side, Caesar Cueves led the way with a time of 24:55.4 gaining 36th-place points and finishing 39th overall. Ramiro Mateos finished with the second-best time of 25:23.7, earning 53rd-place points (60th overall). Not far behind was Camilo Torres finishing with a time of 25:31.6 for 56th-place points (64th overall).
On the women's side, Ami Jacobson made school history with the seventh-best 6k time as she was the top women's runner for CSUN for a fourth time this season. She set a new PR time of 21:47.0 receiving 50th-place finishing 56th overall. Elin Markarian was next across the finish line, charting a season-best time of 22:17.2 for 60th-place points (72nd overall).
Savannah Ganter and Sakura Divecchio both set new PR times as well at the race. Ganter had a time of 22:19.4 for 61st-place points (73rd overall). Divecchio had a time of 22:39.1 for 65th-place points (80th overall).

A LOOK BACK AT 2023 NCAA WEST REGIONALÂ
The Matadors competed at the NCAA Division I West Regional on Friday November 10, 2023. The men's team finished in 26th place with 723 place points out of 29 teams while the women's team finished in 33rd with 888 points in a 37-team field, which was the best finish as a team since 2016.Â

Camilo Torres led the Matadors men's cross country team with a time of 31:45.5 in the 10k receiving 126th-place points (127th overall). In CSUN history, Torres received the seventh best time on record. Following Torres was Cesar Cuevas who earned 140th-place points with a time of 32:05.5 finishing (141st overall). Cuevas' time was the ninth-fastest on record in the history of CSUN's 10k.Â

On the women's side Elin Markarian finished with a time of 22:04.1 for 158th-place points (160th overall). Markarian improved by seven seconds faster from the previous year. Leann Hamilton also took part at the 2023 regional, running a time of 23:40.4 for 230th-place points (234th overall).
