Matadors Make Midweek Trip to San Diego State

NORTHRIDGE, Calif..---CSUN Baseball hits the road for the first time this season for a midweek clash with San Diego State on Wednesday at Tony Gwynn Stadium. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. Live stats will only be provided for the game.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUP
CSUN at San Diego State
RHP Diego Gutierrez (N/A) vs. RHP Isaac Araiza (0-0, 3.86 ERA)
LEADING OFF
CSUN (1-2) seeks to snap a two-game skid when the Matadors visit San Diego State on Wednesday. The midweek game will be the first of two meetings this season with the Aztecs. The teams will have a return meeting at Matador Field on Tuesday, April 30. This week's game with the Aztecs opens a four-game road stretch, which will culminate with a three-game series at Utah Tech starting Friday.
Wednesday's midweek game also marks the return to the mound for sophomore right hander Diego Gutierrez who will make his first appearance since the 2022 season. Gutierrez missed the entire 2023 season due to injury. As a freshman in 2022, Gutierrez made 16 pitching appearances as he went 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA and 36 strikeouts as a weekend starter.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN officially opened the 2024 baseball season this past weekend at Matador Field. The Matadors would rally to win the opener 10-6 behind a five-run eighth inning. Utah Valley though held off the Matadors in game two, 6-5, and took the rubber game by a 10-6 score on Sunday.
In the series, reigning Big West Field Player of the Year Jakob Simons picked up where he left from last year by going 5-for-11 at the plate with four RBI and three extra base hits. Simons belted a three-run homer in the five-run eighth of CSUN's game one win. Andrew Sojka would homer on back-to-back days in the series while Ben Griffin notched his first career homer, a two-run shot, in Sunday's loss.
On the pitching side, Joshua Romero notched his first career victory as a Matador with 1.1 shutout innings of work out of the bullpen on Friday. CSUN also received a solid first start from freshman right hander Ryan Halamicek who went five innings and gave up two runs on three hits.
The series saw the Matador debuts for 15 players.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE
The Aztecs opened the 2024 campaign at 1-2 after dropping a series to Portland at home. San Diego State fell by one run in each of the first two games to start the year before picking up a 7-1 win the finale. Last season, SDSU went 24-29 overall but went 18-11 in the Mountain West to earn a share of the regular season conference title. Prior to the season, the Aztecs were picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West this year. In the team's first series, Brady Lavoie and Jake Jackson drove in a team-high four RBI apiece. Shaun Montoya returns to the team after hitting .304 with 36 runs scored in 2023. Head coach Shaun Cole is in his first season as head coach.Â
Series History: SDSU lead CSUN 47-42 in the all-time series. The Matadors though have won the last two meetings in each of the past two seasons, both of which have taken place at Tony Gwynn Stadium. CSUN prevailed 7-5 last February at San Diego State.
