CSUN Drops Home Opener Against Oklahoma State
2/8/2024 5:25:00 PM | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN Softball fell to No. 9 Oklahoma State 8-0 in Matador Diamond for the 2024 home opener on Thursday afternoon. Junior Kaylee Escutia and freshman Jerzie Liana had a single each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cowgirls opened the game with a run following a single from Karli Godwin. In the bottom of the first, Shaylan Whatman and Alexis Chavez each made contact, but both were grounded out. Mikayla Carman came up next and flew out. Oklahoma State and CSUN each were scoreless in the second inning.
CSUN threatened in the third inning when Alexa Landeros hit a leadoff single and Liana had a one-out single to put runners at the corners. The Matadors though were turned away on a force out and groundout. The Cowgirls broke through the Matador defense next as they scored two runs in the fourth inning. Escutia fired back with a single at the bottom of the inning, but never scored. The Cowgirls sealed the win in the fifth inning as they capitalized on two CSUN errors to plate four runs and break the game open.
NOTES OF THE GAME
"Obviously, not we wanted, but the good thing is that we have a choice. We have a decision to make and we are moving forward. We did a lot of good things today. I thought Lauryn did really well in the circle, keeping us in the game. In reality, we gave them a lot of the runs. We knew they were going to play fast and smart, and we had the plays but we didn't execute."
"We are a young team, we are still trying to piece things together and how we are going to work. It's a lot of good things in the future and it's our choice now to make sure we use today. Preseason is about getting ready for conference and we had some big positions that went down this game so we have to come together in the areas that we need to, and we will. I'm excited for where we are going to go.
UP NEXT
The Matadors begin the Stacey Winsberg Memorial Tournament against Portland State on Friday, Feb. 9. They will face off in a double header starting at 11 a.m. at Matador Diamnid. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
