HOW IT HAPPENED Game 1
The Matadors opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Kaylee Escutia singled to bring in Whatman home for the first run. CSUN added to its lead on a wild pitch from Portland State that sent Carman blasting home. The second inning didn't see any action as neither team scored. The Matadors threatened the Vikings in the third as Alexis Chavez singled to first and later stole second and third base but didn't score.
Portland State broke through with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but CSUN fired back as Mia Cortez made it home on a fielding error. Whatman followed with a two-out triple to score Jadyn Nielsen for a 4-2 lead. The Matadors kept their momentum going in the fifth as Cortez singled, bringing Carman home. Escutia scored next on a sacrifice fly from Sydney Freijanes. CSUN's score continued to climb as Kennedy Gustin scored on a groundout and Cortez scored on an error. Isabella Alonso pitched into the seventh inning, striking out four before Alexa Ortiz recorded the final two outs for the 8-2 victory.
Game 2
The Vikings opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field to take an early lead 1-0. The Matadors fired back with a few hits but were unable to score in the first inning. CSUN's Lauryn Carranco struck out two in a shutout top of the second. The Matadors tied the game in the bottom of the second as Moani Ioane scored on a dropped ball in center field. CSUN's defense stayed strong as the Vikings stayed scoreless for the third inning. The Matadors took the lead in the bottom of the third as Shaylan Whatman ran in as Escutia hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
Portland State didn't stay down as the Vikings tied the game on a double from Alison Harris. The Vikings would load the bases, but Carranco retired the last two batters to keep the game tied. The Matadors would take the lead back in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of an error to score Raegan Jackson. The Matadors kept the Vikings at bay as they didn't allow another run in the fifth and sixth innings. The Vikings gave the Matadors a scare as they had runners on second and third with nobody out in the seventh. The Matadors didn't flinch as they made a double play taking out the batter and the runner just before they reached home. Carranco finished off the complete game with a strikeout.
