HOW IT HAPPENED
The high-powered Oregon State offense struck first in the opening inning when Jacob Krieg hit a three-run homer with two outs. The Beavers eventually opened up a 4-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Dallas Macias.
CSUN was held hitless until the fourth inning on a two-out single from Griffin. The hit would lead to a two-out rally as an error and a two-run single from Nathan Barraza cut the deficit to 4-2.
However, the Beavers responded quickly in the home half of the fourth. Oregon State loaded the bases with one out before Micah McDowell hit a sacrifice fly. Blake Ignaciak relieved starter Diego Gutierrez looking for the third out of the inning but walked the next two batters to force in a run. Joshua Martinez was summoned from the bullpen, however, he walked Krieg to bring in the Beavers' seventh run. An inning later, Elijah Hainline added to the lead with a leadoff homer for an 8-2 lead.
Down by 8-2, CSUN would show little quit, and in the later innings mounted a rally. In the seventh, Sojka drove in CSUN's third run with a one-out RBI double to plate Roberto Gonzalez. The Matadors loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but settled for the one run.
An inning later, the first two Matadors were retired to start before Gonzalez worked a walk, Trent Abel singled and Sojka walked to load the bases. Neighbors delivered a big three-run double to right field to clear the bases and bring CSUN to within 8-6.
Oregon State countered with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth from McDowell, but the Matadors again threatened in the ninth. An Andrew Gauna walk began the rally with one out then Griffin singled and Matthew Pena was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the third-straight inning. After Bridger Holmes struck out Gonzalez, Will Linberg was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Sojka stepped to the plate next looking to even the game with a hit, but he was forced to bounce into a fielder's choice for the final out.
