CSUN Travels to Cal State Fullerton This Weekend

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (20-14, 8-4 Big West) continues its road swing with a weekend series at Cal State Fullerton. The series opens on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. before continuing on Saturday at 5 p.m. and concluding on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS
CSUN at Cal State Fullerton
RHP Thomas Bainton (2-1, 4.05 ERA) vs. LHP Mikiah Negrete (4-2, 3.21 ERA)
RHP Ryan Halamicek (4-2, 5.45 ERA) vs. LHP Peyton Jones (0-1, 2.59 ERA)
TBD vs. RHP Derek Turner (0-1, 4.71 ERA)
LEADING OFF
CSUN (8-4) heads into the weekend just 1.5 games back of first-place UC Irvine (11-4), which is on a conference bye this weekend. The Matadors have won their last three conference series and picked up eight wins over their last 10 conference games. Also in the mix in the top half of the conference are Cal Poly (11-4), UC Santa Barbara (8-4) and UC San Diego (10-5-1).
This week, CSUN visits Cal State Fullerton with hopes of avenging a key series loss to the Titans last season at Matador Field. The teams would finish tied in the conference standings, but by virtue of a series win, the Titans received the automatic bid into the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN finished 3-1 last week including picking up a series win over Long Beach State at home. The Matadors took the opener from the Dirtbags 8-7 behind a three-run bottom of the ninth where Will Linberg hit a walk-off RBI single. CSUN clinched a series win in game two with a 10-4 triumph as the Matadors scored four runs in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie and added another four runs in the seventh. The Matadors led game three 6-0 behind a grand slam from Jakob Simons, but the Dirtbags rallied for a 10-7 win to salvage the series finale. On Tuesday, CSUN got back on the winning track with a 9-1 non-conference win at Pepperdine as seven pitchers combined to limit the Waves to five hits.
SURGING AT THE PLATE
Jakob Simons powered CSUN in the series against Long Beach State, driving in nine runs and hammering three homers. Along with his grand slam in the finale, Simons belted two homers and drove in four in the game one victory. Over his last six games, Simons has produced 15 RBI with four homers as he now leads the team with 41 RBI and 13 home runs.
Kevin Fitzer has reached base in 28 consecutive games after reaching safely in the first two games of the Long Beach State series. After a two-run homer in game two of the series, Fitzer has homered 10 times on the year while he leads CSUN with a .404 batting average, .844 slugging percentage and .518 on-base percentage. Kamau Neighbors has extended his hit streak to 15 games as he has raised his season batting average to .349. Other top hitters include Jarren Sanderson who has a .391 batting average and 18 RBI while Will Linberg is batting .302 with 14 runs scored.
ON THE MOUND
Thomas Bainton, who starts Friday's series opener, tops the Matadors with 45 strikeouts to go with a 2-1 record and 4.05 ERA. Freshman Ryan Halamicek will start game two of the weekend series as he comes in with consecutive wins in conference games. Halamicek sports 4-2 record with 19 strikeouts and a 5.45 ERA. Joshua Romero continues to lead the team with seven wins, all out of the bullpen, and a 2.13 ERA.
BIG WEST LEADERBOARDS
CSUN enters play tops in The Big West with 39 home runs as a team while the Matadors are second in runs (266), RBI (238), stolen bases (48), sacrifice hits (37) and fielding percentage (.979). Individually, Kevin Fitzer leads the conference in OPS (1.362), total bases (92) and slugging percentage (.844) and ranks second in doubles (12). Jakob Simons is first in the conference in homers (13) and second in runs (44), RBI (41) and slugging percentage (.704). Kamau Neighbors checks in at fourth in the conference in walks (27) and eighth in runs (33). On the pitching side, Joshua Romero tops The Big West with his seven wins.
ABOUT CAL STATE FULLERTON
The Titans hold a 13-21 overall record with a 5-10 Big West mark. After taking two of three from UC Riverside last weekend, the Titans split with Arizona State in midweek games earlier in the week. Fullerton has gone 9-9 at Goodwin Field on the year. A season ago, the Titans played in the NCAA Regionals and finished the year at 32-24 overall. Eli Lopez leads the Titans with a .320 batting average to go with 26 runs scored, 12 RBI and two homers. Maddox Latta has a team-best 25 RBI with two homers and a .267 batting average. Earning the start on Friday, Mikiah Negrete sports a 3.21 ERA, 41 strikeouts and a 4-2 record. Fullerton sports a team 4.38 earned run average.
Series History: Fullerton leads CSUN 82-57 in the all-time series after taking two of three from the Matadors last season. CSUN though won a series at Goodwin Field two seasons ago behind a late three-run homer from Gabe Gonzalez in the finale.
