NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field's Chase Mars earned his first career Big West Track Athlete of the Week award on Tuesday, the league office announced. Mars set personal bests in two events this past weekend and notched his first event victory of the outdoor season.
Originally from Chino Hills, Mars has enjoyed a strong first outdoor season with CSUN in 2024. After posting a pair top-three finishes at his first invite at the Trojan Invitational (March 22-23), Mars had a breakout showing at the UC Irvine Vince O'Boyle Track and Field Classic on March 29.
Mars won the 200m dash event with a personal record time of 20.73, claiming his first outdoor win as a Matador. His time in the 200m was the third-best recorded in school history. He would finish in second place in the 100m dash as well, registering a new PR of 10.30, which also ranked tied for third place in program history.
Mars also helped the CSUN 4x100 relay finish in first place at the meet. He would team with Tosh Black, David Phillips, Jr. and James Crawford to post a school record time of 39.29. The quartet's 4x100 time is ranked ninth-best in the nation this season.
Mars' award marks the second straight week a member of the CSUN Track & Field team has won the Big West Track Athlete of the Week award. Phillips claimed the same honor on March 26 while Trey Knight also collected Field Athlete of the Week on the same day.
The CSUN Men's Track & Field team currently holds the No. 22 spot in this week's USTFCCCA top-25 national rankings.
CSUN returns to competition on Saturday, April 6 at UC San Diego's Triton Invitational.
