CSUN's Davis Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships
5/29/2026 6:57:00 PM | Men's Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.---Senior thrower Kyriaun Davis became the first Matador to qualify for nationals on Friday as the CSUN Men's Track & Field team wrapped up competition at the NCAA West First Round at John McDonnell Field.Â
James Crawford (100m), Isaiah Butler (discus) and Jay Louison-Roe (triple jump) also represented the Matadors at the west regionals on Friday.Â
CSUN's Davis made the most of his second discus throw, which went for 57.29m (187-11). That toss would put him ninth in the 48-athlete field, punching his ticket to the NCAAs in Eugene, Ore.
Coming into the west regionals, Davis held a No. 18 seed in the region after setting a personal-best of 58.41m (191-8) in his Big West Championship victory. His toss at the conference championships would also set a new school record. Davis is the first Matador men's athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the discus since Derek Cooper in 2008.Â
In the men's 100m quarterfinals, Crawford came within 0.10 seconds of qualifying for the NCAA Championships as he put forth one of the top efforts in school history. Crawford would clock a time of 10.21, good enough for the second-best mark in the Matador record book. However, he placed 14th place overall at the regionals, just two spots away from qualifying for nationals.Â
Crawford's effort at the regionals caps a bounce back year on the track. After competing at the NCAA Championships in 2024, Crawford missed nearly the entire 2025 outdoor season. In 2026, he would establish a new PR in the 100m on two separate occasions while he finished fourth in the 100m at this year's Big West Championships.Â
Butler was the Matadors' second representative in the men's discus on Friday, as he finished 37th in the field after his third attempt went for 52.11m (170-11). The junior wraps up a strong first season with CSUN, which included setting the fifth-best toss in school history at 56.77m (186-3).Â
Louison-Roe was the final Matador to compete at the NCAA West First Round as he participated in the men's triple jump. Making his second straight regional, Louison-Roe would foul on his three attempts. Despite the result on Friday, Louison-Roe caps an outstanding Matador career, which included a Big West triple jump title in 2025. Louison-Roe also established a new triple jump PR in 2026 of 15.81m (51-10.5) to rank seventh-best in school history.Â
ACCORDING TO COACH JUSTIN JOHNSON
"Amazing performance from Ky today. It really was impressive what he accomplished. I'm proud of all the men that made it here. They competed well and represented CSUN at a high level.Â
"We still have four women ready to compete tomorrow, so we will rest up and get ready for tomorrow's competition."
UP NEXT
