CSUN Opens Up Competition at NCAA West First Round on Wednesday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field kicks off the 2026 NCAA West First Round on Wednesday at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark. A total of 10 Matador qualifiers will compete at this week's regional from May 27-30. Live coverage will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â

LOOKING TO PUNCH THEIR TICKET TO EUGENE
The Matadors aim to return to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships this season, which will be held from June 10-13 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene. Ore. In sprint events, the top 24 athletes in the first round qualify for the quarterfinal round. From there, the top 12 in the quarterfinals qualify for the NCAA Championships. In field events, only one round will be held at the regionals where the top 12 qualify for a spot at nationals. CSUN was last represented at the NCAA Championships in 2024, where Matador athletes competed in four separate men's events.Â
WEDNESDAY'S PARTICIPANTS
CSUN's senior Tylor Connelly participates in the men's hammer throw in the opening competition of the NCAA West First Round, which starts on Wednesday at 7 a.m. PT. This year's regional will be the first in the career for Connelly, who earlier this season set a PR of 64.82m (212-8). Connelly would take third place in the hammer at this year's Big West Championships.Â
Wednesday also features the men's 100m first round where senior James Crawford will make his second career regional appearance in the event. The 100m will be held at 12 p.m. Crawford had a season-best in the 100m in the finals of the Big West Championship, as he ran at a wind-aided time of 10.23 to take fourth place. He would set a PR of 10.26 earlier this month at the Franson Last Chance meet. In his last regional appearance, Crawford finished 12th overall in punching his ticket to the 2024 NCAA Championships.Â
Sophomore Walter Pierce wraps up day one by competing in the 400m at 12:25 p.m. Pierce is making his first career regional appearance this season as he is coming off a runner-up finish in the 400m at the Big West Championships. He set a PR in the event of 46.11 at Franson Last Chance in May.Â
FRIDAY'SÂ PARTICIPANTS
The men's discus begins Friday's competition with two Matadors set to debut at regionals. The competition begins at 11 a.m. Kyriaun Davis is coming off a Big West title win in the discus where he broke his own school record. Davis claimed first place with a top mark of 58.41m (191-8). Isaiah Butler is also competing in the event at regionals, as he holds a season-best mark in the discus of 56.77m (186-3).Â
Senior Jay Louison-Roe returns to the west regional in the triple jump after taking 31st place in 2025. Louison-Roe holds the top triple jump mark in the Big West this season at 15.81m (51-10.5) while he won the conference championship in the event in 2025.Â
SATURDAY'S PARTICIPANTS
Three Matadors are set for competition in the women's discus on Saturday at 11 a.m. Senior Summer Mosley makes her fourth regional appearance this season as she holds the top discus mark in the region at 59.60m (195-6). That mark propelled Mosley to a second straight Big West discus championship earlier this month while she also broke her own school record in the process. Seniors Katherine Shipp-Davis and Amani Britton each make their regional debuts on Saturday in the discus. Shipp-Davis finished second in the discus at the Big West Championships with a PR of 55.28m (181-4) while Britton also established a new personal-best at the conference championships where she was fifth at 51.04m (167-5).Â
Senior Camryn Harris will compete in the women's triple jump at 4 p.m. Harris reached the podium at the Big West Championships where she finished in third place with a PR of 12.86m (42-2.25). She is also making her regional debut this season.Â
