5/12/2024 4:33:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball fell to UC San Diego 9-2 in the rubber game of the weekend series on Sunday at Matador Field. Jakob Simons provided the offense with a two-run homer, his 16th blast of the season. The Tritons scored four unearned runs in the top of the first before scoring single runs in five other innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A two-out error opened the door for UCSD to jump ahead in the first. After Destin Allen-Fox retired the first two batters, Anthony Potestio reached on a throwing error from third base. From there, Emiliano Gonzalez hit an RBI double, Andy Ambriz singled in another run and Doyle Kane blasted a two-run homer for a 4-0 lead.
The Matadors responded quickly in the home half of the first in cutting the deficit in half. Kamau Neighbors set the table with a leadoff single before Simons hammered a two-run home run to left to bring CSUN to within 4-2.
However, it would be all UC San Diego after the Simons homer. Starter Matthew Dalquist settled down on the mound and retired 13 of the next 14 batters. The Matadors would be held hitless by Dalquist until a two-out hit from Trent Abel in the fifth, but Neighbors was quickly retired on a lineout moments later.
The Tritons got a run back in the top of the third on a one-out homer from Ambriz. UCSD would get another key two-out hit in the fourth when Postestio stroked an RBI single to bring home Noah Sudyka for a 6-2 lead.
Over the last three frames, UCSD added single tallies in each inning to further extend its lead. Benjamin Rosengard collected a two-out RBI single in the seventh while Postestio picked up an RBI double in the eighth and another run came in to score in the ninth following a double play.
UCSD's Izaak Martinez blanked CSUN over the last three innings, scattering two hits for the save.
