8/25/2024 9:35:00 PM | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Men's Soccer collected a go-ahead goal from Arturo Reveles in the 86th minute en route to upsetting No. 11 LMU 2-1 on Sunday evening at Sullivan Field. Deryk Jones, Jr. scored his first career goal early in the match while also helping set up Reveles' game winner late in the contest. Goalkeeper Merrick Cook finished with four saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors came out quickly out of the gate, earning a pair of corner kicks before hitting the game's first goal in just the fourth minute of action. After taking over possession on their side of the field, the Matadors went on the attack leading to Marley Edwards finding a streaking Jones up the left sideline. Jones dribbled twice and sent a chip shot over a diving goalkeeper Ky Mani Dade and into the net to put CSUN ahead 1-0.
Â
CSUN continued to rack up shots in the ensuing minutes with Jake Shaked earning a pair of shots including an attempt on frame in the 13th minute. LMU was held without a shot until the 23rd minute when Cook snuffed a strike from Hakeem Morgan. After a pair of Lion corner kicks, Morgan had another shot stopped by Cook in the 30th minute. The Matadors gained solid looks from Zion Wagoner and Enrique Pineda late in the half, but the game remained 1-0 heading into intermission.
In the early moments of the second half, the Lions pressured the Matador defense, resulting in three shots and three corner kicks in the first two-plus minutes of action. LMU would finally break through in the 53rd minute with Mydas Smalls and Anthony Wilson setting up Gael Quintero for the equalizer. After six cards were issued in the first half, another four would be handed out in the second period. LMU was forced to play a man down beginning in the 64th minute when Kayvon Monfared was whistled for a second yellow.
Both sides looked for the go-ahead goal down the stretch of the match as Cook made a pair of saves while Dade saved an attempt from Reveles. Finally, Jones and Reveles teamed up to put the Matadors back ahead in the 86th minute. The duo played catch above the box before Reveles sent a low shot through the defense and into the left corner of the net for a 2-1 lead. CSUN would not allow an LMU shot attempt over the final three-plus minutes in holding onto the 2-1 victory.

NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH TERRY DAVILA
"It's been a very eventful five days, playing JMU and then going over to play LMU -- two top 20 teams. We had an opportunity to play these two teams, we're very thankful and grateful to play such finely organized and coached teams. It gave us an opportunity to improve. It gave us an opportunity to see where our players are and to see how much farther we need to go to be a great team. But I'm happy with the steps we've taken and I'm happy with the victory today. We've been through a lot. The kids had a lot of things to deal with today. We had an unfortunate thing happen to us today and the kids handled the adversity, stayed mentally tough and we're very proud of them as a group. We're very proud of our Northridge student-athletes."
