CSUN Drops 1-0 Decision to Cal
9/1/2024 9:39:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---A goal in the 74th minute would prove to be the difference in CSUN Men's Soccer's 1-0 loss to California on Sunday at Matador Soccer Field. Goalkeeper Merrick Cook recorded four saves in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN appeared to be the aggressor for most of the night as the Matadors led in shots and scoring chances over the 90 minutes. Zack Harris took CSUN's first two shots to start with each shot going high. The Matadors had seven shots compared to the Golden Bears' two over the first 45 minutes, but neither side reached the frame. Over the final 10 minutes of the first half, Enrique Pineda and Arturo Reveles just missed wide of the net while CSUN's pressure led to a late offside call.
Harris and Rosten each put shots on goal to start the second half while Cal received two shots from Israel Cortez, which were saved by Cook. CSUN's netminder made two more saves off attempts from Cortez near the 65th minute mark to help keep the game scoreless.
The Golden Bears though finally broke through in the 74th minute. Malcom Zalayet and Alfredo Ortiz set up the play, leading to Justin Knighton picking up the ball at the top of the box. Knighton made a turn and took advantage of a downed defender to rifle the net for a 1-0 Cal lead.
CSUN would pressure the ball down the stretch looking for the equalizer. The Matadors appeared to have the game-tying goal in the 75th minute when a cross from Boniface Fatohou into a scrum at the net led to David Garcia getting a touch on the ball. Cal was able to get a team save on the play as the ball neared the goal line. The play stopped, but the center official waved off a potential goal. Down the stretch, Reveles put a shot on frame and Siddiq Lezzar nearly hit the equalizer as well in the final minute of action, but Cal held on for the victory.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH TERRY DAVILA
"You have to be clinical. We weren't clinical. We didn't do some early crosses. I thought we shot a little too far out sometimes. We did enough to get opportunities to win the game, but if you don't score, you watch the other team score, and they did. We made an error, and they capitalized, and good for them."
