NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Soccer played to a 0-0 draw with Pacific on Thursday night at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors' shutout was the second of the season as goalkeeper Merrick Cook finished with five saves in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Each side produced a shot in goal in the first five minutes of action while CSUN later just came up empty on attempts from Zack Harris and Marley Edwards. In the 19th minute, Edwards forced a save from Joshua Moya leading to a CSUN corner kick. Pacific produced a flurry of shots as well near the 23rd minute mark, but CSUN's Cook was up for the challenge. Cook stopped a shot from Jose Maria Barrera then withstood a pair of Pacific corner kicks and an attempt from Emanuel Obiefuna that he saved. Jorge Solorzano also just missed the net for CSUN with a pair of shots from the top of the box including a laser that was just wide of the left corner of the netting. Pacific's best look of the first half came in the 35th minute when Jacob Heisner hit the left crossbar and Zion Vaughn followed with a quick second attempt, however, Cook was there for the save.
The Matadors earned several more scoring chances early in the second half with Solorzano putting another shot on frame in the 52nd minute. Siddiq Lezzar had one of CSUN's best attempts of the night on a header in front of the goal, but Moya knocked the ball out of the bounds. In another close call for CSUN, Edwards would strike the right post from straight away in the 66th minute. Down the stretch, the teams played physical with five yellow cards issued over the final 12-plus minutes. Cook made the final save of the night in the 80th minute as he stopped a shot from Ezekiel Padilla.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH TERRY DAVILA
"We want to win bad. We're doing everything we can to produce opportunities to score goals, they're just not going. We just have to score.
"Our defense has been phenomenal. It's been about maturity, great goalkeeping and having great players [that's led to the team's defensive success]."
