CSUN's Late Rally Falls Short at Oregon

EUGENE, Ore.---CSUN Women's Soccer's late rally fell just short in a 2-1 loss against Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Papé Field. Cailey Jackson hit the net for the second time this season late in the match, but the Matadors could not find the equalizer in the closing moments.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jordyn Canister put the game's first shot on frame in the second minute of play before Oregon countered with a pair of early shots that were each saved by goalkeeper Riley Liebsack. Despite being outshot 11-6 in the first half, CSUN had its share of solid looks at the net as Canister forced a save when she sent a laser from the top of the box, which led to a corner kick. Samantha Healy almost hit the net as well off a corner kick, but Maddy Goldberg reacted quickly to hit the ball out of bounds.
Â
The Ducks nearly hit the net in the 39th minute when Liebsack was brought off her line on a one versus one, however, the Matador defense cleared the play. Oregon though finally broke through in the 41st minute on a drive up the left side. Lucy Green delivered a cross to Cameron Bourne who finished at the near post for an Oregon 1-0 lead.
Â
After intermission, the Ducks struck again less than five minutes into the second period. On a possession on CSUN's side of the field, the Ducks moved the ball around until Grace Mensah sent a pass into the box where Haley McWhirter got a touch on the ball before Bourne finished the play in front of the net. Oregon continued to generate scoring chances in the second half, but Liebsack and the CSUN defense was up for the challenge. Liebsack made five more saves against 14 shot attempts to help keep CSUN within striking distance.
CSUN would finish with a flurry in the closing minutes of the game. The Matadors took advantage of an Oregon turnover to cut the deficit in half in the 86th minute. Kaylee Gutierrez, who had just substituted into the game, took the ball away from the Oregon backline, leading to Jackson finding room and sending a shot into the left corner of the net from the top of the box. The Matadors continued to pressure the Ducks' defense in the final minutes of game including picking up a timely corner kick in the 87th minute. On the corner, the ball found its way in front of the goal where several players stood, but CSUN could not execute a shot on the play. The Ducks would survive that play and hold on down the stretch.
