SACRAMENTO, Calif.---A goal in the 81st minute was the difference in CSUN's 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sacramento State on Thursday afternoon at Hornet Field. CSUN outshot the opposition and put seven shots on goal, but the Hornets found the go-ahead goal late to take the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors came out aggressive in the first 10 minutes of action as Cailey Jackson put a pair of shots on goal followed by a shot from Kayden Perigo that was saved by goalkeeper Izzy Palmatier. The Hornets outshot the Matadors 9-8 in the first half, but CSUN led 6-1 in shots on goal over the 45 minutes. CSUN nearly had the game's first goal after a Yoshi Rubalcava cross found Cassidy Imperial-Pham at eight yards from the goal. Imperial-Pham was able to get a header on the ball, but the shot just went wide left. Late in the half, Samantha Healy sent a deep shot that appeared it would sail over the head of Palmatier, but the shot was smacked over the crossbar. On the flip side, CSUN goalkeeper Riley Liebsack made her only save of the first half on a high shot from Ariana Scholten in the 26th minute.
CSUN continued to apply pressure on the defense in the second half, leading to an 8-4 edge in shots. Perigo recorded two shots in the early going of the period while Jackson had her shot blocked leading to a CSUN corner kick in the 65th minute. Palmatier kept the game scoreless with a save off a Jordyn Canister shot attempt as the game remained scoreless until the 81st minute of play. The Hornets would finally break up the 0-0 tie at the 80:32 mark of the game when Ali Fuamatu-Ma'afala sent a deep pass over the CSUN defense toward a streaking Abigail Lopez in the box. Lopez found room on the left side of the box and sent a quick shot past the outstretch hands of Liebsack for the goal. The Matadors looked for the equalizer in the closing minutes, but the Hornets turned away each chance. Imperial-Pham registered CSUN's last shot in the 88th minute, which sailed high of the net.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We outshot them 16 to 13, but the important stat is shots on target, which we had seven and they had two. We played very good today but unfortunately didn't put away our chances. We need to be more clinical in the final third to score goals, but I am proud of the progress the team is making. Tough result for sure because we really played a good game overall. We are excited that we now have three games in a row at home."
