LAS VEGAS, Nev.---CSUN Men's Soccer could not overcome a first-half deficit in a 1-0 loss at UNLV on Sunday at Johann Memorial Field. Goalkeeper Merrick Cook finished with two saves including one via a penalty kick to help keep CSUN within striking distance during the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rebels' Lincoln Aquino recorded the game's first shot in the second minute of action as the Matador defense was there for a team save. CSUN though went on the attack minutes later resulting in a pair of shots on frame from Deryk Jones, Jr. as well as a missed shot from Jorge Solorzano. The two sides combined for 12 shots in the first half with the Rebels posting seven. UNLV finally broke through in the 35th minute, taking advantage of a loose ball in the box. Gabe Sanchez would finish the play with a left-footed shot that sailed just out of reach of a diving Cook for the goal.
Early in the second half, UNLV looked to double its lead when CSUN was whistled for a penalty kick. Nico Lopez took the penalty shot, but Cook made a timely two-handed stop at the right post to keep the score at 1-0.

The Rebels would be forced to play a man down for the final 22-plus minutes when Theo Minard was shown a straight red card. Playing aggressively, CSUN gained several scoring chances down the stretch leading to four shots on frame and five corner kicks. In the 79th minute, Boniface Fatohou came perhaps the closest to tying the game when his shot banged off the left post while Solorzano had his shot saved by Hugo Lemus a minute later. Siddiq Lezzar had CSUN's last shot of the night in the 86th minute, but UNLV recorded a team save to help preserve the shutout.
NOTES OF THE GAME
"UNLV was a good opponent. We are always disappointing when we don't get a result, but we have a tough Santa Clara team next week to look forward to."
