9/26/2024 9:19:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LONG BEACH, Calif.---Junior Yoshi Rubalcava's sixth minute goal would hold up as CSUN claimed its first victory at Long Beach State since 2012 in a 1-0 triumph on Thursday evening at George Allen Field. The Matadors secured their second shutout of the season with goalkeeper Riley Liebsack picking up five saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors' lone shot on goal came in the sixth minute of action and it would be the difference in the match. The shot came off the foot of Rubalcava who scored on a drive from the left after a series of dribbles to put CSUN ahead 1-0 just 5:21 in the match. Long Beach State looked to respond quickly with a shot from Liz Worden, but her shot was off the mark. Liebsack made her first save of the match in the ninth minute, turning back a shot from Kassandra Ceja. The Beach recorded six shots compared to four for the Matadors in the first half with the CSUN defense picking up a pair of blocks on those attempts. CSUN nearly doubled its lead late in the first half on an attempt from Sydney Lipkin that hit off the right post, as the score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.
After intermission, the Beach recorded a pair of corner kicks and earned another shot on goal from Makayla Demelo, but CSUN's defense continued to hold strong. Overall, Long Beach State outshot the Matadors 7-2 in the second half with a majority of those attempts occurring early in the period. Liebsack stopped another Demelo shot in the 63rd minute before making her fifth save of the night on a shot attempt from Summer Laskey a minute later. After the Beach picked up two more strikes from Jordan Candelaria and Ceja, they were held without a shot attempt over the final 16-plus minutes by stingy CSUN defense.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We are so proud of the team tonight! They are working hard, extremely coachable and listening to our game plan. They have been an absolute joy to coach and we are so happy to get the away result tonight."
