Cal Poly Sweeps CSUN in Big West Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Junior Leah Miller hit .389 with nine kills but the CSUN women's volleyball team fell to visiting Cal Poly in straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-19) in the Big West opener for both teams Friday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Miller and Hailey Brockway each had nine kills to lead CSUN (5-7, 0-1 Big West) in the opener but the Mustangs would out-hit the Matadors .372 to .160 as a team. Iye Okolo connected for six kills on nine swings in the middle to hit .556 while fellow middle Tatiana Turgeon added five kills (.300).
Cal Poly also had a sizable 9-1 lead in team blocks and an 8-4 edge in aces while CSUN out-dug the Mustangs, 34-33 behind eight digs apiece from Paige Sentes and Autumn Rojelio.
S1 – The two teams traded sideouts until 11-11 when Cal Poly scored four straight to open up a 15-11 cushion. CSUN picked up a block out of the media timeout to end the run, and was within two at 16-14 and again at 19-17 when Brockway's kill pulled CSUN within one. But the Mustangs would outscore the Matadors 6-2 down the stretch to seal a 25-20 win.
S2 – The Mustangs, who hit .524 in the set, put up a block to take an early 7-4 lead early on in set two. Okolo's kill snapped the run but Cal Poly would extend the run to 9-2 to lead 13-6 forcing a CSUN timeout. The Mustangs would lead by as many as seven (18-11) before the Matadors rallied back to within four (20-16). CSUN would get within three at 21-18 when Cal Poly hung on for the 25-19 win.
S3 – CSUN raced out to a 5-1 lead before the visitors rallied back to take a 6-5 lead. The run extended to 8-1 as the Mustangs opened up a 9-6 advantage. Trailing by as many as six (18-12), the Matadors claimed three straight points to pull within 18-15 following a Mustang hitting error. CSUN was also within three at 20-17 following another Cal Poly hitting error but the Mustangs would close the set on a 5-1 run to seal the 25-18 win and the 3-0 sweep.

- With the win, Cal Poly improves to 8-4 (1-0 Big West) while improving to 41-29 in the all-time series against CSUN.
- Sentes had her streak of 11 consecutive matches with double figures in digs snapped with eight against the Mustangs.
