CSUN Tennis Drops Close Big West Opener Against Hawai’i

MANOA, Hawaii - CSUN Women's Tennis was defeated in a close 5-2 dual against Hawai'i Saturday afternoon to open up Big West play. After losing the doubles point and the first two singles matches, CSUN stormed back to win the next two matches before losing the clinching match due to retirement. UH won the final battle en route to earning five points and taking the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN dropped the first doubles match of the day as Victoria Santibanez Luna and Madison Shepperson fell to Sheena Masuda and Peppi Ramstedt of UH by a score of 6-2. The Rainbow Wahine would then go on to clinch the doubles point as Emma Moratalla Sanz and Sofia Dermenjyan were defeated by Hannah Galindo and Makeilah Nepomuceno by a tally of 6-4.
In the third doubles match, CSUN's No. 1 team of Yuliia Zhytelna and Angela Ho were victorious over Ana Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova, by a score of 6-4. Zhytelna remains undefeated in doubles play to start the spring season.
Ho shared her thoughts on today's action, "This was the team's first conference match and despite the adversities we faced, we competed till the very end. I am very proud of the competitiveness of the team despite the results. I had a really good doubles match where I felt aligned with [Zhytelna]. This translated to my singles where I was able to stay positive and confident throughout the whole match."
After clinching the doubles point, UH took home the first match of singles as Joelle Lanz bested Shepperson, 6-1, 6-2, bringing the score to 2-0 in favor of Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine would then be on the doorstep of taking the match as they won the second singles point as Sydney Wilson fell to Emma Forgac, 6-2, 6-1.
Despite being down 3-0, CSUN was not done fighting. Ho, the junior from San Francisco brought home the Matadors' first point of the day as she defeated Homolkova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
CSUN would then take consecutive points as Moratalla Sanz bested Galindo in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
Down 3-2, CSUN was on the verge of tying the match at three apiece. Santibanez Luna was beating Ramstedt 1-6, 6-4, 5-4 before the redshirt senior had to retire, clinching the win for the Rainbow Wahine
UH would earn the fifth and final point after Zhytelna dropped a close contest against Vilcek, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
NOTES OF THE MATCH
CSUN returns home for a non-conference showdown with Westmont College this Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Matador Tennis Complex.
