NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Senior Cailey Jackson scored a 73rd minute game winner to help CSUN Women's Soccer knock off Cal State Bakersfield by a 1-0 score on Sunday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Jackson's goal was her team-best fifth of the season while senior Riley Liebsack posted three saves in securing her seventh shutout of the season.Â
With the win, CSUN moved into a first place tie in the Big West standings with 11 points and a 3-0-2 conference record with five matches left on the schedule. The Matadors also posted their fifth consecutive shutout in league play.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors began quickly with a shot just 56 seconds into the match when Jackson forced a turnover on the CSUB backline, leading to a shot that was just wide right. Jackson was off target in the 17th minute while Kayden Perigo had her shot saved by goalkeeper Kamy Anaya moments later. Paige Califf also tested the Roadrunners' goalkeeper in the 25th minute after a clear out, but the game remained scoreless. Liebsack would record two saves of her own in the first half, stopping an attempt from Jaiden Gore in the 32nd minute and making a two-handed stop off a low shot from Daniela Osejo in the 38th minute.
Bakersfield went on the attack to start the second half with four shot attempts coming in the first seven-plus minutes of action. Moments later, the Matadors returned the favor with a shot on goal from Jordyn Canister while Jackson had her shot blocked. After back and forth play for the first 20-plus minutes of the second half, CSUN began to chip away at the CSUB defense. Following a Califf shot that was struck by Anaya over the cross bar, CSUN earned a corner kick, which led to Cassidy Imperial-Pham delivering a header that was saved by the defense at the goal line. Bakersfield attempted to clear out the ball, but Siena Navara sent the ball back into the Matador attacking third where Jackson gained possession after a pair of CSUB touches. Jackson would fire a first shot from the top of the box that was blocked, but she regained possession and sent a second shot that struck the top right corner of the netting to put CSUN ahead 1-0.Â
CSUB would pressure the Matador defense down the stretch, looking for equalizer, but CSUN was up for the challenge. Despite a corner kick and two late shots over the final seven minutes, the Matadors secured the shutout victory.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We knew coming into today's match that it was going to be a very even battle. If you look at all of the statistics for both teams, we're almost equal in every category, so we knew it was going to be a tight game, probably a one goal game, and we were going to need a 90-minute performance on both sides of the ball. Obviously, it was going to be defense first, organization, and we do our homework to put together a good game plan. Again, the team came through, executed and worked really hard on the defensive side. I kept telling Cailey that 'it was going to come,' you could feel it, she was getting close and sure enough she put it in the back of the net for us, which is exciting for her to get another goal for her on the board after not having one for a little bit. Very proud of her and proud of the entire team. Riley with another shutout today, but it was really a testament to our entire team for their defensive efforts, starting with our forwards, our midfielders and our backline. Every single person is filling their role and doing their part, and we're really proud of them. We believe in them that they are capable of getting these types of results and they are executing."
