WAIPAHU, O'ahu---CSUN Women's Soccer used a pair of first-half goals to knock off Hawai'i 2-0 on Thursday evening at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Matadors' shutout was their sixth in a row, tying a school record as CSUN moved into sole possession of first place in the Big West. Siena Navarra scored her first career goal while Paige Califf hit the net for the second time this season. Riley Liebsack had three saves in notching her eighth shutout of the year.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN took control in the early going with pressure on the Hawai'i net. Cailey Jackson nearly gave CSUN the lead in the fifth minute when she beat her defender and had a one-on-one with goalkeeper Kennedy Justin, however, her shot was just off line. Moments later, an attempted clearout from Hawai'i on the Matadors' offensive third led to Navarra gaining possession from above 30 yards. Navarra set herself up with a left-footed shot that sailed above the outstretched hands of Justin and into the netting for a 1-0 lead at the 6:02 mark. Hawai'i looked to respond, gaining two corner kicks, but the Matador defense blocked away a pair of shots and Liebsack made a timely save off a close range shot from Izzy Ayala.Â
Â
In the 18th minute, the Matadors would benefit from a Hawai'i foul in its own box to double their lead. Kayden Perigo looked to retrieve a cross pass from Yoshi Rubalcava but was knocked to the ground by a Hawai'i defender. As a result, CSUN earned a penalty kick and Califf calmly struck the net to put CSUN ahead by a 2-0 margin.Â
