CSUN Rallies to Top Long Beach State, Clinches Big West Regular Season Title
10/30/2025 9:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Jordyn Canister broke a 1-1 tie in the 75th minute to help propel CSUN Women's Soccer to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Long Beach State and a Big West regular season championship on Thursday at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors battled back from a 1-0 halftime deficit with second-half strikes from Lia Peterson and Canister. CSUN posted its first Big West regular season title since 2016 and second overall in team history with the victory.
Picked to finish in ninth place prior to the start of the year and finishing in last place two seasons ago, CSUN secured the No. 1 seed in the Big West Championship and a first-round bye with the win, coupled with a UC Santa Barbara loss on Thursday. Along with the No. 1 seed, the Matadors will also host the final two rounds of the Big West Championship on Nov. 6 and Nov. 9 at Matador Soccer Field.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Needing a win to have a chance at the Big West crown, the Matadors would fall behind in the first half. The Beach nearly took the lead in the 17th minute when Logan Nidy hit the cross bar, however, the score remained scoreless until the 28th minute. Ameera White set up the first goal of the game with a center pass to Radisson Banks who then one-touched the ball to Malea Johnson for the score from inside 10 yards. The Matadors looked for the equalizer for the remainder of the first half, almost tying the game on a 42nd minute shot from Canister that was knocked into the crossbar by leaping goalkeeper Aurora Schuck. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Beach heading into intermission.Â
CSUN came out as the aggressors out of halftime, resulting in the game-tying strike in the 50th minute. Out of a throw-in, Cailey Jackson sent a pass to Cassidy Imperial-Pham who then delivered a service into the box. Peterson gathered the pass and finished with a left-footed shot through Schuck, just inside the near post to level the game at 1-1. After the strike, the Matadors kept up the pressure with Peterson having her shot blocked and Paige Califf missing just wide. Canister, who just missed high on a solid look from the right wing, would get another chance moments later in the 75th minute. Yasmin Azar found a streaking Canister from deep in the box on a service, leading to the go-ahead strike as Canister finished with a right-footed tapper to put CSUN on top 2-1.Â
Â
Playing with a one-goal lead, CSUN nearly came away with insurance goals in the final minutes, but Schuck stopped attempts from Canister, Peterson and Imperial-Pham. The Matadors withstood a late corner kick before managing the clock in the final moments to seal the victory.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"It feels amazing. I'm so proud of everyone involved in our program. All of the staff, all of the student-athletes -- they have gone above and beyond to listen and buy in to what we as coaches want from them.Â
"We always tell them everybody is so important. Everybody has a role, whether you're a starter or a reserve, what we call game changers, or even the players that didn't get to play, all of those roles are important and impactful. We believe in our seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen. Lia is a true freshman, coming off the bench and getting the first goal and Jordyn, as a redshirt sophomore, gets the second, it's very impressive. And our 10 seniors, they've been the heart and soul of this program and they've gone through so much. We've just talked about what they are truly capable of and leaving everything with CSUN Women's Soccer in a better place than how they found it, and they've done that and more."
UP NEXT
