CSUN's Furious Rally Falls Short at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.---CSUN Women's Soccer trailed by as many as three goals but its late rally fell short in a 3-2 defeat at New Mexico on Sunday at UNM Soccer Stadium. Jordyn Canister scored her first goal of the season while Ariana Lopez-Angel collected a second-half penalty kick in defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lobos would jump on the Matadors in the early minutes of the game, netting two goals in the first 17 minutes of action. UNM took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, capitalizing on a CSUN penalty. Nicole Anderson struck the netting off the penalty kick for a quick Lobo lead. Minute later, relentless shooting at the Matador net led to another New Mexico goal. After Anderson began the attack by hitting the left post, Alysa Whelchel followed with a second shot that banged off the crossbar. From there, Celina Frenze finished the play with a third shot that found the netting for a 2-0 advantage. Anderson completed a brace with a 28th minute goal, putting the Matadors in a 3-0 hole. Despite a rough start, the Matadors began to switch the momentum in the later moments of the second half. Theresa Castro hit the crossbar in the 36th minute while Yasmin Azar found the post as well late in the period. A corner kick for CSUN though finally led to a goal as Azar found Canister for a header in front of the net to cut the deficit to 3-1.

In the second half, the Matadors kept the momentum on their side, nearly scoring again on a Canister attempt that hit the crossbar. In the 67th minute, the Lobos would commit a foul in its own box, giving the Matadors a chance at a penalty kick. Lopez-Angel was called upon to take the PK and she calmly struck the back of the net, pulling CSUN to 3-2. Later in the half, CSUN appeared it drew another penalty kick in the 81st minute as Jana Akins was taken down in the box. However, after a video review, the Matadors were whistled for an offside prior to the foul, wiping away the penalty kick. The Matadors would receive late looks from Castro and Lia Peterson but could not find the equalizer as New Mexico held on for the victory in the final moments.

NOTES OF THE GAME

CSUN drops to 1-4-0 on the season while New Mexico improved to 2-1-0.
The shot count was even at 15-15 while the Lobos held a 10-3 lead in shots on goal.
CSUN led in corner kicks, 3-2.
A total of 17 fouls were called on CSUN whistled for 11 compared to six for UNM.
Both Alena Ramirez and Harper Curnutt received yellow cards for CSUN.
Castro led the Matadors with five shots.
Both of Lopez-Angel's goals this season have been via penalty kicks.
Sydney Lipkin played the full 90 minutes for the Matadors.
