NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball broke open a tight game late in an 100-88 triumph over Sacramento State on Monday evening at Premier America Credit Union Arena. Five Matadors scored in double figures led by Josiah Davis who had 22 points and 10 assists. Davius Loury scored a season-high 20 points while Larry Hughes II added 18 points. The Matadors ended the game with a 21-8 run en route to victory.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN came out quickly on the offensive end, making four of its first five shots for an 8-5 lead. The Hornets surged in front at the 13-minute mark, taking a slim 16-13 lead before the Matadors had an answer. Loury drilled a pair of threes, helping start a 13-3 run which put CSUN ahead 25-19 with 10:45 on the clock. The lead expanded to double digits at the seven-minute mark when CSUN completed a 9-0 run. Loury would knock down all six of his threes in the first half alone as his three at the 4:01 mark made it a 44-34 game. Two more late threes from Loury including a buzzer beater gave the Matadors a 52-44 lead at the break.Â
Â
The Matadors scored six of the first seven points to start the second half with Hughes putting CSUN ahead 58-45. However, Hughes picked up his fourth foul moments later, forcing him to the bench. Sacramento State capitalized on four consecutive CSUN misses with a 12-2 run to pull to within 60-57. Moments later, Jahni Summers and Prophet Johnson hit back-to-back threes to put their team ahead at 63-62. CSUN reclaimed the lead on its next possession via a Mahmoud Fofana layup, but Sacramento State went back in front seconds later on a Shaqir O'Neil jumper. The teams traded leads once more before the Hornets went ahead 73-68 with 8:24 to go. CSUN though did not go away quietly as Hughes returned to the game and promptly made a jumper, helping key a 6-0 run.Â
The Hornets took an 80-78 lead with 6:08 to go, but from there, the Matadors turned the game around on the defensive end. Five straight defensive stops, coupled with an 11-0 Matador run gave the home team an 87-80 edge. Hughes would drain a clutch three at the 1:21 mark, stretching the lead back to double digits while Davis punctuated the victory with a thunderous dunk through the teeth of the defense in the final seconds to seal the win.Â

NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH ANDY NEWMAN
"I told them they did a great job of withstanding their run, being resilient and not giving up, powering through and staying with their defensive concept of doing it together. We got away from that, they made a run, but we got back to it. I'm just super proud of them."
