GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball completes a seven-game road stretch on Tuesday when it visits LMU in midweek action at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
FOR STARTERS
CSUN (2-10, 0-3 Big West) will play its 10th road game already this season when it faces LMU on Tuesday night. On the current road stretch, CSUN has played top-20 ranked teams in Oklahoma and UC Santa Barbara, coming out on the losing end six times, but each of the last four games were decided by two runs or fewer. Following the midweek game on Tuesday, the Matadors will play their next four at Robert J. Hiegert Field starting with a Big West road series this weekend against UC Irvine. The homestand will then conclude next Tuesday, March 18 against Columbia.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN gave 16th-ranked UC Santa Barbara all it could handle over a hard-fought three-game series at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Despite holding a late lead in all three games, CSUN walked away with three heartbreaking defeats. The defending Big West champion Gauchos were down to their final out in game one of the series before tying the game with an RBI single and eventually winning the game in 13 innings by a 4-3 score. In game two, CSUN held an 8-7 lead as late as the seventh inning, but UCSB rallied once more for a 10-8 victory. The script would flip a bit in game three with UCSB leading 7-0 before CSUN roared back to take a 9-8 lead on the back of a six-run eighth, only to fall in walk-off fashion, 10-9, on a home run.
BIG PERFORMANCES AT UCSB
On the offensive side, Andrew Becker was a terror at the plate, batting .538 (7-of-13) against UCSB, totaling two doubles and two RBI. Roberto Gonzalez was also strong, batting .385 (5-of-13), highlighted by a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth in game three. Other top performers include Kyle Panganiban, who hit a game-tying three-run homer in game three, and Will Linberg, who hit a go-ahead two-run triple in game two. On the pitching side, Ryan Halamicek led the way with a quality start in the opener of the series, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs to go with a career-high eight strikeouts.
LEADING THE WAY
After a big series at UCSB, Andrew Becker has moved into the team lead in batting at .414 to go with five RBI while senior Roberto Gonzalez is batting .317 with seven runs scored and five RBI. Another freshman, Colton Boardman sports a team-best nine runs scored to go with four RBI. Sophomore slugger Matthew Pena continues to lead the team with two homers and 10 RBI. On the pitching side, junior Diego Gutierrez has a team-best 16 strikeouts while sophomore Gabriel Hernandez leads the bullpen with a 2.45 ERA with 14 strikeouts.
