CSUN Splits Doubleheader with the Rainbow Wahine in Big West Battle

NORTHRIDGE, Calif --- CSUN Softball went 1-1 against the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond. CSUN won the first game 4-1, but then dropped the second game 4-3. Lauryn Carranco pitched a complete game in game one, picking up the win after striking out eight. Jadyn Nielsen had two RBI's to lead the offense. In the second game, CSUN was led by Mikayla Carman who had two runs batted in. Carman and Nielsen had four hits total over the two games.

GAME ONE
CSUN was led in the circle by Carranco who held down the Rainbow Wahine offense. She struck out four in the first three innings, retiring the side in order in two out of those three innings. In the fourth inning, Carranco retired the Rainbow Wahine with two runners stranded on the basepaths.Â

There was no score until the bottom of the fourth. Tiara Westbrook got things started with a double to centerfield. After Jizzell Ruiz pinch ran for Westbrook, Jerzie Liana bunted Ruiz over to third for the first out. The next batter, Kylie Galindo, flew out to center field, but Ruiz scored, making it a sac fly and a run for the Matadors to make it 1-0.Â

It would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth. Alexis Chavez reached on an error to start things. Larissa Flores then bunted Chavez over to second for the first out. Rhea Furtado then pinch ran for Chavez. Kaylee Escutia walked, and Carman singled to left to get the bases loaded for Nielsen. Nielsen promptly singled up the middle, knocking in two runs to make it 3-0.

Fast forward to the bottom of the sixth. Galindo doubled to right center to kick things off. She took third on a ground out. Raegan Jackson pinch ran for Galindo and she would steal home on a double steal attempt after an error by the Rainbow Wahine defense. That made the score 4-0 CSUN heading into the seventh.

In the seventh, Carranco finished things up, allowing a run on a sacrifice fly but striking out Kayara Tuiloma to end the game.

GAME TWO
UH got all the scoring done in the first inning. Kolbi Kochi doubled with the bases loaded in the first off Isabella Alonso to make it a 2-0 game. The next batter, Lilliana Thomas doubled as well, before being thrown out at third trying to extend her hit to a triple. She did plate two runs in the process to make it a 4-0 game out of the gate.

In the bottom of the second, CSUN got two runs back. The first batter of the inning, Gizella Vargas Sandoval singled to right field. With two outs, Jackson got hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Carman then doubled to right center, scoring Vargas Sandoval and Jackson, cutting the lead in half at 4-2.

That would be it in terms of scoring until the fifth inning. Liana singled to third base. Ruiz pinch ran for Liana and reached third over the course of the next two at bats. Ruiz scored on a single from Alexa Landeros, pulling the Matadors to within one.

CSUN had a chance to tie in the final inning. After a single from Galindo, Vargas Sandoval doubled to right center. Galindo got thrown out at home trying to score on the double. CSUN's next batter then grounded out to shortstop to end the game.

"I was proud of their fight. We got down early, but I was proud of our defense for keeping us in the game. Overall for the day, it was a decent day. We will win and lose together, but just got to get better and I have to be better as a coach as well."

- With the results, CSUN is now 11-13 (4-1 Big West) on the season.
- In game one, the top three in the order, Carman, Nielsen and Westbrook each had two hits.
- Carman now has 11 RBIs on the season,
- After today, Nielsen is sporting a .462 average in the games she has played (15)
- Carranco's eight strikeouts in game one was a season high for her.
- Today was CSUN's first win against Hawai'i since 2023Â
