NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN beach volleyball team (4-6) had a see-saw day on Friday, dropping a 3-2 decision to Concordia before bouncing back to defeat Utah by the same 3-2 score in a four-team quad dual at the CSUN Beach Volleyball Complex.

The Matadors opened a four-match day on the home sand, taking on Concordia which is receiving votes in this week's AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll. Four of the five scoring pairs went the distance with the visiting Golden Eagles pulling out the 3-2 win. CSUN picked up the first point day when Maleya Miles and Hannah Heflin came back to win the final two sets in the No. 4 pair. After dropping set one to Nicole Miller and Samantha Campion 21-8, the Matador pair took the second 21-19 before pulling out a 15-13 win in the third. Concordia evened the dual in the No. 2 pair when Korah Nordin and Ashley Rossi won the final two sets to top Ainsley Patrick and Haley Coggins, 14-21, 21-12, 15-13.
The Matadors went back in front when Tia Mendiola and Julia Bazylevych claimed the third straight three-set decision, topping Eva Prewitt and Lexi Godbey in the No. 5 pair, 17-21, 21-14, 15-11. After CUI's Sara Ostojic and Kelissa Lemoine defeated Tasha Mae and Kinley Lindhardt on the No. 1 court, 21-16, 21-17, the dual came down to the No. 3 pair which would also be decided in three sets. After dropping the opening set 21-17, CSUN's Layla Cederlind and Dylan Hall took a thrilling second set 21-19 before falling in the final set (16-14) to Kelia Giusta and Gabby Reinking.
CSUN 3, UTAHÂ 2
Looking to salvage the day, the Matadors and Utes split the two pairs in the opening flight. Utah's Bella Vezzani and Langley Griffin swept Patrick and Coggins in the No. 2 pair by the score of 21-14, 21-18 before Hall and Heflin teamed up in the No. 4 pair to defeat Sonja Wessel and Maeve Griffin, 25-23, 21-15.
Mendiola and Bazylevych opened the second flight with a 21-19, 21-14 victory over Lauren Sayre and Chloe Narancich to put CSUN up 2-1. The Matadors then clinched the dual when Mae and Lindhardt swept Katie McAlister and Quincy Stephens, 21-11, 21-17 on the No. 1 court. The Utes earned the final point of the match in the No. 3 pair as Kylie Pitzak and Elly Collins went three sets to hold off Cederlind and Miles, 16-21, 23-21, 15-10. Â
HEAD COACH ARI HOMAYUNÂ SAID
"A tough loss against CUI in the morning. Losing in the third with the duel tied at 2-2 definitely stings, but I'm glad the girls were able to turn the corner. A good win against a solid Utah team. Having the home-court advantage in wind that we are used to definitely helped us out when we needed it. Teams are always hard to beat the second time around, so we need to show up ready to go tomorrow morning. I'm also excited to take on Santa Clara, especially after they beat Concordia 3-2 in overtime."
UP NEXT
The Matadors conclude a six-match week on Saturday, hosting Utah at 9 a.m. and Santa Clara at 1 p.m. The Utes and Broncos will play the middle dual at 11 a.m.
