Matadors Looking to Win Season Series Versus Hawai’i Wednesday
4/22/2025 1:59:00 PM | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- CSUN Softball (19-22, 12-8 Big West) will host the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (26-15, 12-7 Big West) for a makeup game initially scheduled for March 14, Wednesday afternoon at Matador Diamond. First pitch will commence at noon.
FOR STARTERS
CSUN enters Wednesday's makeup game fourth overall in the Big West at 12-8. The Matadors are a half-game out of the third spot currently occupied by Hawai'i. A win versus the Rainbow Wahine would move CSUN into third place entering the penultimate series against UC San Diego this weekend.
Hawai'i is coming off a series against UC Santa Barbara where they split two matches with the first game getting rained out. In a doubleheader, UH won game one 4-3 and lost the second game 5-3.
LAST TIME IN THE BATTER'S BOX
CSUN won its series against Cal State Bakersfield this past weekend at Matador Diamond. The Matadors won game one in comeback fashion 8-7. Alexa Landeros led the way with three RBI while Kylie Galindo, Gizella Vargas Sandoval, Jadyn Nielsen and Alexis Chavez all had an RBI in as well.
The Matadors lost game two of the doubleheader but went on to win game three via a blowout, 9-2. Mikayla Carman, Jerzie Liana and Tiara Westbrook each led the way with two RBI's. Lauryn Carranco pitched a complete game, only allowing two runs in the win.
CARRANCO THE CAPTAIN IN THE CIRCLE
Carranco has been one of CSUN's top pitchers seemingly since she first put on the uniform her freshman year in 2023. She has had impressive numbers during her first two seasons, and her junior year is no different. The junior from Clovis is 11-8 with a 2.85 ERA (good enough for third in the Big West) against some very strong opponents. She has 16 complete games so far this season while tallying 86 strikeouts in the process. She already has 142 innings pitched in 26 appearances. Carranco was a Preseason All Big-West Team honoree and she is proving to be worthy of that accolade so far.
TIARA WESTBROOK - THE TRANSFER THAT BRINGS THE FIRE
Westbrook transferred to CSUN from Oregon State this past season and has already had an immediate impact on this Matador lineup. Earlier this season she had a superb performance in the Mary Nutter Classic. Westbrook took Big West Player of the Week honors for her contributions. She batted .588 with a .882 slugging percentage. Overall, Westbrook is leading the team in home runs with eight, including one versus Cal State Bakersfield this past week. She is leading the team in RBI's with 32 and in total bases with 73
SCOUTING HAWAI'I.
Before the Rainbow Wahine fell to UC Santa Barbara this past weekend in their final game, UH won six in a row including recording a sweep over Cal State Bakersfield April 11-12.
UH is in the middle of the pack in both batting average and pitching. Hawai'i is fifth in the Big West in batting average with a .273 clip. The Rainbow Wahine is a little further down the charts in pitching, as they are seventh with a 4.28 ERA. The best player for UH is Jamie McGaughey. The sophomore from Petaluma, California is batting .327 with a 1.114 OPS. She leads the team in home runs (10), RBI's (30) and total bases (77).
The Rainbow Wahine is led in the circle by a duo of arms. Addison Kostencich and Macy Brandi are both stellar pitchers. Kostencich is ninth in the Big West in ERA with a 3.28 ERA. Brandi is 14th in the Big West with a 3.55 ERA while she has 12 complete games and five shutouts. Kostencich is also 11-9 with 10 complete games.
Hawai'i is also second in the Big West in conference home runs with 14.
Series History: Hawai'i leads 28-21. These two teams squared off earlier this season at Matador Diamond. They split both games played, so Wednesday's match is a rubber match for the season. CSUN won the first game of the doubleheader 4-1, and lost the second game 4-3.
