CSUN Looks to Get Back on Winning Track at Long Beach State

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball returns to Big West competition this weekend with a three-game series at Long Beach State. The opener is set for Friday at 6 p.m. while the rest of the series is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. The final two games of the series will be broadcast on ESPN+.
FOR STARTERS
With 15 games left in the regular season, CSUN (8-27, 4-14 Big West) will play 12 of its remaining games against Big West competition. The Matadors are five games back of the top five in the Big West, which would qualify CSUN for a Big West Championship tournament berth. After this weekend's series, CSUN will host its last midweek game against USC before opening a three-game series with UC Riverside at Robert J. Hiegert Field.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND
CSUN battled No. 6 Oregon State in a hard-fought three-game series last weekend with the Beavers pulling out three-high scoring victories. Oregon State won the opener 13-8 while it held off late rallies from the Matadors in 16-11 and 15-12 decisions. Sophomore Jarren Sanderson broke out offensively in the series, hammering three home runs including hitting two homers and driving in five runs in the middle game of the series. At the top of the lineup, senior Roberto Gonzalez batted .538 in the series (7-of-13), finishing with four runs scored, four RBI and two stolen bases. In all, CSUN scored 31 total runs against the Beavers, highlighted by six home runs.
MATADOR LEADERS
Roberto Gonzalez has moved into the team lead in batting entering play this week. His season .336 batting average tops CSUN and also ranks 10th-best in the Big West while he is also second in the conference in triples (4), eighth in OPS (1.014), ninth in on-base percentage (.463) and 11th in stolen bases (8). Sophomore Trent Abel, who is second on the team in batting at a .329 clip, is hitting a team-high .364 in Big West play on the year. In the runs department, the trio of Gonzalez, Andrew Becker and Kyle Panganiban have 25 apiece while Panganiban has a team-best 43 hits in his first season on the field. Becker, who is batting .323 as a freshman this year, sports a team-leading 24 RBI to go with nine doubles. In home runs, Jarren Sanderson, Andrew Gauna and Matthew Pena have hit six apiece.
On the pitching side, junior Diego Gutierrez has already posted a career-best 52 strikeouts to lead CSUN. The right hander has also made a personal-best 10 starts and collected two wins in 55 innings of work. Sophomore Ryan Halamicek also has two wins on the year while he is a close second in strikeouts with 44.
WHO'S HOT?
Jarren Sanderson hit an even .500 in CSUN's four games last week (5-for-10) as he racked up seven RBI, five runs scored and three homers with a 1.400 slugging percentage. Roberto Gonzalez also was hot on the plate over the past four games, batting .471 (8-for-17) with five runs scored and four RBI. Cameron Calvillo sports a 10-game on-base streak where he has batted .375 (12-for-32) over that span with five RBI. Over the past 10 games, Andrew Becker has driven in a team-high 11 runs to move into the team lead with his 24 total RBI. In the bullpen, freshman Jackson Banuelos has not allowed a run over his last three outings, which has accounted for five shutout frames.
SCOUTING LONG BEACH STATE
The Dirtbags are 15-22 on the season along with 9-12 in Big West play. LBSU comes in just 1.5 games back of the top five in the Big West. Last week, the Dirtbags dropped two of three to Cal State Fullerton while they also lost a 12-2 decision this past Tuesday to USC. As a team, LBSU is batting .236 while its ERA stands at 6.20. Kellan Montgomery ranks second in the Big West in wins with seven to go with a 4.36 ERA and 43 strikeouts while Albert Roblez is fifth in the conference in strikeouts (58) and seventh in ERA (3.08) over 14 total appearances. On the hitting side, Kyle Ashworth ranks ninth in the Big West in batting average (.344) and sports two homers and 29 RBI. Armando Briseno and Dylan Lina top the team with five homers apiece.
Series History: Long Beach State holds an 87-73-1 edge over CSUN in the all-time series, which dates back to the Matadors' inaugural season in 1959. The Matadors though have claimed series victories in each of the past three seasons. In 2024, CSUN won the first two games of the series (8-7 and 10-4 wins) before letting a six-run lead get away in the finale (10-7 loss).
