UC DAVIS 3, CSUN 2
The Matadors opened the championship against the Aggies and despite picking up wins from Maleya Miles and Layla Cederlind and Tia Mendiola and Julia Bazylevych, CSUN fell dropping the other three pairs. Miles and Cederlind swept Kimi Waller and Alex Leal in the No. 4 pair, 21-9, 21-17 before UC Davis pulled even with a 22-20, 21-14 win in the No. 3 pair as Skye Smolinski and Mia Olen topped Dylan Hall and Hannah Heflin. The Aggies made it 2-1 when the No. 1 pair went final as Kylie Miller and Tabitha Mitchell defeated Tasha Mae and Kinley Lindhardt, 21-17, 21-14.
Mendiola and Bazylevych then pulled out a three-set win in the No. 5 pair to pull CSUN even, defeating Emily Uhrinak and Kendal Steller, 21-17, 18-21, 15-11. The deciding No. 5 match also went three sets before the Aggies' pair of Lindsay Heller and Kate O'Steen topped Sophia Jarosz and Haley Coggins, 21-17, 18-21, 15-11 to seal the 3-2 win. Â
CAL POLY 5, CSUN 0
Looking to earn a Thursday split, the Matadors came up empty in five pairs against the Mustangs. The first two pairs went to Cal Poly in straight sets as Logan Walter and Izzy Martinez defeated Mendiola and Bazylevych, 21-8, 21-12 in the No. 2 pair. The Mustangs' Piper Ferch and Erin Inskeep then swept Mae and Lindhardt, 21-14, 21-11 on the No. 1 court to put Cal Poly up 2-0.Â
The Mustangs continued to roll as the ocean wind started getting stronger as the day went on. The No. 4 and No. 5 pairs went to Cal Poly in straight sets as Ella Connor and Madi Nichols topped Miles and Cederlind, 21-11, 23-21 before Abbey Reinard and Elise Lenehan swept Jarosz and Coggins, 21-18, 21-16. Hall and Heflin were the only CSUN pair to grab a set as they forced a three-set decision with Quinn Perry and Lindsey Sparks at No. 3 before falling 21-12, 18-21, 15-12.
COACH ARI HOMAYUNÂ SAID
"Definitely a heartbreaker to lose a really close one to Davis in the opening round. We had so many opportunities, and we battled hard, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough. We knew Cal Poly was going to be tough, but it was nice to be able to work out some kinks from our Davis match. Hopefully, the girls feel motivated and ready to take on Bakersfield for the 6th time tomorrow."
UP NEXT
The Matadors will meet Cal State Bakersfield in an elimination match Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Ocean Park Beach Courts.
