CSUN Wins Third Straight with Road Victory Against UC San Diego
4/25/2025 7:54:00 PM | Softball
LA JOLLA, Calif -- CSUN Softball defeated the UC San Diego Tritons, 5-1 Friday night at Triton Softball Field. Kaylee Escutia and Jadyn Nielsen each hit a home run in the win. Nielsen led the Matadors with two RBI. Tiara Westbrook added an RBI as well. Lauryn Carranco pitched a complete game, striking out seven in the process.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mikayla Carman led off the game with a double down the line while Nielsen moved her over to third with a ground out to the second baseman. Moments later, Westbrook got the job done as a ground out to the shortstop was able to bring Carman home to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead after a half inning.Â
Â
In the bottom of the first, with a runner on and one out, there was a deep flyball out to center field off the bat of Jaden Hill. Raegan Jackson robbed her of a home run as she extended her glove over the wall, keeping it a one run game through one.
Â
In the first two innings, Carranco was dealing in the circle. She tallied three strikeouts while only allowing one hit in the first two frames.
Â
CSUN nearly added to its lead in the fourth. With the score still 1-0, Kylie Galindo singled to left field to kick off the inning. Rhea Furtado would enter the game as a pinch-runner for Galindo before Alexis Chavez reached on a fielder's choice, but Furtado would be safe due to an error on the second baseman. With two on and nobody out, Jackson bunted the runners over to second and third. Larissa Flores then walked to set up the bases loaded for Carman. However, Carman fouled out to the first baseman and the game remained 1-0.Â
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, UC San Diego tied the game. After Haley Garcia reached on an error, she was moved over to third on a ground out. Zara Wasserman hit a sacrifice fly to score the runner to make it 1-1 through four innings.
Â
Carranco kept up her good pitching in the circle for the Matadors as she tallied six strikeouts in the game's first five innings to keep the game tied.Â
Â
In the top of the sixth, CSUN did its most damage yet. With nobody on, Escutia launched a solo home run over the left-center wall to put CSUN on top 2-1. The next batter, Jackson, got hit by a pitch and later advanced to second on a Flores sacrifice bunt. Nielsen then came up with two outs. She promptly blasted a ball over the left field wall for a two-run home run to make it 4-1.  After a single from Westbrook, Jerzie Liana followed with a single, which led to a pair of defensive miscues that allowed the run to score. CSUN would take a 5-1 lead through five and a half innings.
Â
Carranco held things down as UC San Diego failed to tally any more runs.

NEWS AND NOTES
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"As an offense we've been doing some things that we've been working on. I am really proud of the way Kaylee has come through. Her at-bats keep getting better. I am trying to get our offense to realize you don't have to be the best on every pitch, just stick with the process. We had 10 left on, we've got to be better with that. Again, I am really proud of their fight. Lauryn did an amazing job, she set the tone in the circle. I thought Raegan did a heck of a job robbing that home run. We played our game today, as long as we keep focusing on that, we'll be in a good spot."
