Four First-Place Finishes Highlight CSUN's Busy Track & Field Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field wrapped up a busy weekend of competition on Saturday with four first-place finishes on the men's team and multiple personal records reached across the board. The Matadors split up their team with a majority competing at the UNLV Rebels ELITE in Las Vegas while a dozen throwers competed at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif.
The weekend would be highlighted by the men's 4x400m relay team establishing a new school record and finishing first at UNLV. Also in Las Vegas, Chase Mars was victorious in the 200m while Tibyasa Matovu won the 400m title and Camilo Torres took first in the 5000m.
MEN'S PERFORMANCES
CSUN's 4x400m team of Walter Pierce, Logan Davis, Gabe Martinez and Matovu reset the Matador record book with a time of 3:07.32 to take first place. The quartet bested five other teams in the event. CSUN previously established the 4x400m record last season (3:03.93) with Martinez also being a member of that team.
Mars won his second consecutive 200m title in as many weeks as he clocked a wind-aided time of 20.95 to take first place out of a 46-athlete field. Daniel Harper also cracked the top 10, finishing in sixth place at 21.48.
Matovu finished first in the 400m, winning with a time of 46.73 out of 37 athletes. The junior notched his second 400m title of the outdoor season and in as many weeks. Pierce set a PR in the 400m as well, finishing fourth with a time of 47.40 followed by Martinez in sixth place at 47.64.
Torres took home his first career 5000m title, beating out a 15-athlete field with a time of 15:12.91 at UNLV. Thomas Achten finished in the sixth place in the same event, running at 15:42.22.
Other top performances at UNLV included Mars who was second overall in the 100m with a wind-aided time of 10.26 while Joey Nations took ninth place at 10.50. Elijah Stenberg was third in the 1500m (3:58.92) and in the 800m (1:56.59) on Saturday while Ramiro Mateos finished fifth in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:56.36. In the long jump, Nations was the top Matador as he charted a leap of 7.32m (24-0.25) to take fifth place. Rounding out the UNLV events, the CSUN 4x100m team of Davis, Caleb Harrell, Mars and Shamil Youngblood were fifth with a time of 40.27.
Out in La Jolla, Tylor Connelly was second overall in the hammer throw with a toss of 56.84m (186-5). In the shot put elite event, Guillermo Lopez finished eighth by reaching 16.59m (54-5.25) while Lopez was 13th overall in the discus with a toss of 46.70. (153-2). Elijah Ignacio competed in the discus elite field, finishing 13th with a throw of 53.00m (173-10).
WOMEN'S PERFORMANCES
At UNLV, the CSUN women received a strong effort from junior Camryn Harris who took second place in the triple jump with a mark of 12.36m (40-6.75) out of a 17-athlete field.
Savannah Ganter was second overall in a seven-athlete field in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking a time of 11:33.61 in Las Vegas. In the long jump, Zola Grey set a new PR of 6.03m (19-9.5) to finish third overall. Simone Smith also finished in the top-10 in the long jump, taking 10th overall with a mark of 5.62m (18-5.25).
Another PR would be reached at the Triton Invitational where Myli Level registered a throw of 47.30m (155-2) in the discus to finish fourth overall. In another fourth-place finish, Jocelyn Hoggard was the top Matador in the shot put where she posted a mark of 12.82m (42-0.75).
In distance races, Ami Jacobson paced CSUN in the 5000m at the UNLV Rebels ELITE, clocking a time of 18:30.46 while Elin Markarian was fifth overall at 18:35.13 and Ganter was seventh at 18:45.64. Leann Hamilton took 10th overall in the 800m by registering a time of 2:18.61.
In other UNLV field events, Alba Moreno Paredes was fifth in the high jump, reaching a mark of 1.65m (5-5) while Naomi Sachs was ninth at 1.60m (5-3). Audrie Reuss also took 16th place in the javelin, setting a new PR of 33.60m (110-3).
The rest of the UNLV track events included Jasmine Haskell taking seventh place in the 400m with a time of 55.47 and Chandler Smith finishing 19th in the 400m-hurdles with a PR of 1:05.84.
In other Triton Invitational results, Treasure Brown led the CSUN field in the discus elite with a throw of 44.34m (145-5) to finish 11th overall. Emily Hutchinson was 15th in the shot put elite, registering a throw of 12.55m (41-2.25). Finally, in the hammer, Marina McNeil-Vivanco finished 18th with a toss of 45.49m (149-3).
