CSUN Drops 5-3 Decision at UC Davis
5/16/2025 10:59:00 PM | Baseball
DAVIS, Calif.---CSUN Baseball fell by a score of 5-3 to UC Davis on Friday evening at Dobbins Stadium. Freshman Andrew Becker drove in two of the Matador three runs on the day, finishing with two hits. The Matadors took a one-run lead to the sixth inning before the Aggies surged ahead and held on for a game two win to even the weekend series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors had scoring opportunities in each of the first two innings but were turned away by starter Ned Frutchey. Becker would be left stranded at second base in the first inning while a 4-6-3 double play ended a Matador rally in the second.
CSUN would finally break through in the top of the third, capitalizing on an Aggie miscue. Xavier Rios reached on an error at third base to start before Roberto Gonzalez moved the runner into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Becker came through with a two-out RBI double for a 1-0 CSUN lead.
The lead was short-lived as the Aggies pulled ahead in the home half of the third against CSUN starter Jon Mocherman. The first five batters reached safely to start the inning, but CSUN minimized the damage when Becker threw out Alex Gouveia at home plate. Nick Leehey though delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to put the Aggies on top 2-1. Mocherman would escape further trouble by retiring the next two batters.
The Matadors struck back in the top of the fourth, manufacturing a run on just one hit. Following a Will Linberg leadoff walk, Cameron Calvillo picked up a single to left field. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base before Matthew Pena drove in the tying run on an RBI groundout.
Mocherman kept the Aggies at bay in the fourth inning, pitching around a pair of one-out hits. The scoreless frame allowed CSUN to break the tie in the top of the fifth. Gonzalez opened up that inning with a double while Kyle Panganiban moved the runner to third on a bunt. Moments later, Becker rifled a triple to left center, giving CSUN a 3-2 lead. However, CSUN settled for just the single tally as Becker would be thrown out at home on a fielder's choice.
After Mocherman was lifted from the game, Noah Rinehart worked his way through the fifth inning where the Aggies collected back-to-back singles.
In the sixth though, the Matadors could not escape unscathed as the Aggies reclaimed the lead. A costly error early in the sixth inning led to a pair of unearned runs scoring. Tyler Howard had the biggest hit of the inning, a two-run double with runners at second and third base. UC Davis would take a 5-3 lead later in the inning on a passed ball.
CSUN would get a chance to respond in the top of the seventh after Panganiban walked to start the inning and Andrew Gauna reached on an error. The Matadors had runners at second and third base with one out, but Carter Delaney retired Linberg and Calvillo in succession. Unfortunately for CSUN, the rally in the seventh was its last of the night as Delaney sat down the Matadors in order in the eighth and ninth to secure the win.
