Knight, Nations and Mosley Collect Titles at Big West Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field opened the 2025 Big West Championships on Friday with three individual title wins at Jack Rose Track. The Matador men's team scored 20 points on day one of the conference championships, good enough for fifth place while the Matador women sit in seventh place at 22 points.
Senior Trey Knight successfully defended his men's hammer throw title while junior Joey Nations took home the men's long jump championship on Friday. On the women's side, senior Summer Mosley won her first Big West conference title with a first-place finish in the hammer throw.
MEN'S PERFORMANCES
Knight became the first Matador since Erick Loomis in 2018-19 to win back-to-back hammer throw titles. His best throw of the day came on his fourth attempt that went for 73.11m (239-10) and put him into first place. Knight collected 10 team points for the Matadors with the first-place finish.
After taking 16th place at last year's Big West Championship, Nations was the top performer in the long jump on Friday for his first career Big West title. Nations' best leap was his first attempt of the day when he soared for 7.53m (24-8.5). His performance gave the CSUN men's team 10 team points. Nations became the first Matador to win the Big West long jump title since Reindell Cole in 2010. Also in the long jump, Jonrich Dela Cruz was 21st with a leap of 6.83m (22-5).
Reigning 200m Big West champion, Chase Mars qualified for the final round of the 200m after running at 20.69 in the prelims. Mars was first in his heat and fourth overall in the event. Logan Davis was 19th in the prelims at 21.33 followed by Ehinome Inegbenoise in 22nd place (21.45) and Jayden Smith in 26th place (21.63).
Three Matadors qualified for the 400m finals, led by Tibyasa Matovu, who finished first in his heat and fourth overall in the prelims with a time of 47.97. Gabe Martinez took fifth place, finishing second in his heat with a PR time of 47.26. Walter Pierce also qualified for the finals by taking ninth place at 47.80. Other Matador competitors in the event were Jayden Smith who was 18th (48.81) and Luke DaVanon who was 28th (50.97).
Mars would fall just short of the 100m finals as he took 10th overall in the prelims at 10.41. Nations charted a time of 10.51 to finish 14th in the prelims followed by Caleb Harrell in 15th place (10.56), Inegbenoise in 21st place (10.73) and Shamil Youngblood in 22nd place (10.74).
In other field events, Elijah Ignacio was 10th overall in the shot put with a toss of 16.74 (54-11.25) while Guillermo Lopez was 11th at 16.48m (54-1), Santiago Cerda was 15th at 15.89m (52-1.75) and Francisco Isiordia was 17th at 15.59m (51-1.75).
In distance races, Thomas Achten set a PR in the 10000m with a time of 31:32.30, finishing in 13th place. Ramiro Mateos took 14th place in the 3000m-steeplechase by charting a time of 9:30.46 followed by Diego Rodriguez in 16th place at 9:39.65. Elijah Stenberg missed the finals of the 1500m, finishing in 17th place with a PR of 3:53.48. Darrick Jacob, Jr. was 21st in the 800m prelims with his time of 1:56.88 while Stenberg was 22nd at 1:59.09.
WOMEN'S PERFORMANCES
Mosley captured the hammer throw title on her final toss of the day, which went for 59.66m (195-9). The first place finish gave the CSUN women 10 team points on the leaderboard. Mosley became the first Matador since Monique Griffiths to win the Big West hammer throw championship. Also in the event, Marina McNeil-Vivanco just missed scoring as she was ninth with a PR of 51.49m (168-11) followed by Ada Murray in 19th place at 44.54m (146-1).
Emily Hutchinson almost came away with a second straight shot put title, finishing in third place with a throw of 14.78m (48-6). Hutchinson gave CSUN six team points with her performance. Other performers in the event included Jocelyn Hoggard who took 11th place at 13.32m (43-8.5) along with Amani Britton in 12th place at 13.31m (43-8) and Brianna Kelpis in 19th place at 12.63m (41-5.25).
Savannah Ganter scored two team points in the 3000m-steeplechase, finishing in seventh place and setting a PR of 10:58.90. Her time is the second-best in Matador history.
In the high jump, Alba Moreno Paredes scored CSUN one team point with an eighth-place finish and set a PR of 1.68m (5-6). Naomi Sachs was 14th in the high jump at 1.63m (5-4.25) and Ashleigh Porter was 16th with a mark of 1.63m (5-4.25).
Jasmine Haskell would qualify for the final round in the 400m after running at 54.78 to finish fifth in the prelims. Jayden Lopes was 26th in the event, charting a time of 57.93.
In the long jump, Zola Grey was the top Matador with a mark of 5.76m (18-10.75) to finish 15th while Chandler Smith claimed 18th place at 5.69m (18-8), Kelpis took 27th place at 5.37m (17-8.25) and Simone Smith was 30th at 5.33m (17-6). Kelpis also competed in the 100m-hurdles prelims, finishing in 18th place at 14.31.
Leann Hamilton missed the cut for the 800m finals as she was 13th in the prelims at 2:21.87. Ami Jacobson took home 19th place in the 10000m race, charting a time of 37:09.12 while Sakura Divecchio set a PR in the 1500m race, finishing 23rd at 4:51.06 in the prelim round.
