CSUN Falls to Cal Poly in Series Opener
5/9/2025 9:04:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball totaled 12 hits on Friday night, but Cal Poly took the series opener by a 17-1 score at Robert J. Hiegert Field. Senior Roberto Gonzalez led the way with three hits and drove in the Matadors' lone run of the ballgame. The Mustangs capitalized on three multiple-run innings including an eight-run sixth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mustangs jumped on CSUN early when Zach Daudet stroked a leadoff home run to left. In the home half of the first, CSUN looked for a quick response as Gonzalez and Kyle Panganiban picked up singles to start the inning. The Matadors though were turned back by starter Griffin Naess who sat down the next three batters in succession.
Jon Mocherman, who worked his way out of further trouble in the first inning, retired two of the first three Mustang hitters on strikes in the second. However, Cal Poly would rally with two outs, as Dante Vachini drew a walk and Daudet came through with a seeing-eye RBI single through the left side. Moments later, Ryan Fenn delivered a two-run double to right to suddenly push the lead to 4-0.
Cal Poly came away with another clutch hit in the third when Casey Murray Jr. stroked a one-out RBI double to extend to a 5-0 lead. In the fourth, the Mustangs broke the game open with another big inning. All with two outs, Alejandro Garza and Jack Collins each collected RBI singles while Nate Castellon registered an RBI double. The lead would be 9-0 after a wild pitch capped a four-run fourth inning.
The Matadors would have hits in each of the first four innings but have nothing to show for it due to strong pitching from Naess. The Cal Poly right hander stranded two in the second inning and a runner each in the third and the fourth innings.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs had their biggest scoring outburst yet in the sixth inning. A total of 13 batters came to the plate as eight runs scored. Murray, Xander McLaurin, Garza and Collins had RBI hits in the frame while CSUN pitching forced in three runs on bases loaded walks.
After stranding two runners in the sixth along with a runner each in the seventh and eighth, CSUN finally broke up the shutout in the ninth. Matthew Pena began that frame with a bunt single while Gonzalez came away with a one-out RBI single to put CSUN on the scoreboard.
