CSUN Wraps Up Home Schedule with Weekend Series vs. Cal Poly

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball is set to host its final home series of the season this weekend when the Matadors face Cal Poly in a three-game set. The opener is set for Friday at 5:30 p.m. while the series continues on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
FOR STARTERS
The Matadors will host their Senior Day in Sunday's home finale with nine seniors set to be honored prior to first pitch, which includes Andrew Gauna, Roberto Gonzalez, Diego Gutierrez, Blake Ignaciak, Matthew Kurata, Jesus Liera, Jon Mocherman, Noah Rinehart and Dante Zamudio. After this weekend, CSUN will have just four games remaining on the regular season schedule with each on the road as the Matadors take on USC next Tuesday, May 13 and visit UC Davis for a three-game series from May 15-17.
SENIOR SALUTE
Joining CSUN from San Diego Mesa College, outfielder Andrew Gauna has played two years with the Matadors and totaled 68 games with 48 starts. Gauna has posted career-bests in 2025, hitting .323 with seven homers and 24 RBI. Roberto Gonzalez, a transfer from Imperial Valley College, has played in 65 games over the past two seasons and made 47 starts mainly in the outfield. Gonzalez has scored 34 runs, driven in 26 runs and hit four homers in 2025. Previously an All-Conference catcher with Cal State Bakersfield, Matthew Kurata has played 26 games this season with CSUN and made eight starts where he has recorded three homers and six RBI. At catcher, Jesus Liera joined CSUN this season and played 16 total games after previously playing in Mexico and winning a national championship twice.
A Norwalk native, Diego Gutierrez has spent four seasons on the pitching staff where he has served as a starter and reliever in his career. Gutierrez has appeared in 44 total games with 25 starts including 12 this season where he has registered a career-high 65 strikeouts. Blake Ignaciak, who transferred in from Palomar College last year, has appeared in 38 total games for CSUN, all in relief, totaling 41 strikeouts with 26 coming this season. After beginning his career at Riverside City College, Jon Mocherman has posted a career 3.64 ERA in 19 total appearances on the mound while he has overcome injury that sidelined him for all of 2024. Noah Rinehart has also overcome injury at his previous college in Sacramento State to serve as a Matador reliever and starter this season where he has 19 strikeouts and two wins. Dante Zamudio joined CSUN after previous stints at UC Irvine and Pierce College as he has worked in 11 games and totaled 13 strikeouts.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors collected an 8-3 victory over San Diego State this past Tuesday with the CSUN pitching staff scattering six hits on the night. Max Mendes opened the game with three solid innings, allowing just an unearned run while Nicholas Santivanez took over with two shutout frames with no hits allowed and ultimately earned the victory. Jackson Banuelos, Hayden Hall, Tyler Mejia and Noah Rinehart also worked in relief, combining to allow two runs. Kyle Panganiban and Trent Abel finished with two hits apiece while Will Linberg drove in three runs. CSUN history would be made in the first inning when Roberto Gonzalez collected his eighth triple of the season, the most in the Matadors' Division I history.
CSUN IN THE BIG WEST
Senior Roberto Gonzalez tops the Big West and ranks third in the nation in triples with his eight this season. Gonzalez is also third in the conference in OPS (1.081) and on-base percentage (.477), sixth in slugging percentage (.594), eighth in batting average (.353) and 10th in stolen bases (10). Another Matador on the Big West top-10 is Andrew Gauna, who is fifth in slugging percentage (.604), to go with ranking 11th in OPS (.981) and 13th in homers (7). Kyle Panganiban is also sixth on the conference's doubles list with 14. As a team, CSUN is ranked third in stolen bases (61), fifth in homers (43) and sixth in batting (.274).
SCOUTING CAL POLY
The Mustangs are 32-15 overall and 18-6 in the Big West, currently holding onto the second spot in the conference. Cal Poly has already clinched a postseason spot in the Big West Championship while the team is just two games back of first-place UC Irvine. Winners of four in a row, Cal Poly swept Cal State Bakersfield last weekend and knocked off Pepperdine 12-5 this past Tuesday. The Mustangs rank first in the conference in batting (.308) and hits (516) while the team is fifth in ERA (4.63). Jack Collins comes in third in the Big West in homers (11) and RBI (49). Nate Castellon is also fourth in the league in batting (.365). On the pitching side, Griffin Naess (4-2) ranks sixth in the Big West in ERA while Josh Volmerding (5-3) is tied for sixth place in strikeouts.
Series History: CSUN and Cal Poly have played in 245 total games all time with the teams' first meeting dating back to the 1959 season. The Matadors hold a 126-119 edge in the all-time series. The Mustangs though have won nine of the past 12 meetings including taking two of three last season in San Luis Obispo.
