
CSUN Athletics Mourns the Passing of Baseball Alum Barry Cocheu

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Athletics is mourning the passing of CSUN Baseball alum Barry Cocheu. A standout on the mound, Cochey played with the Matadors from 1984-85 and was a member of CSUN's second NCAA Division II National Championship team.

A former football and baseball standout at Parkland High School in El Paso, Texas, Cocheu would move to California to begin his collegiate career at the College of the Sequoias before transferring to CSUN in 1984.

With the Matadors, Cocheu played for CSUN Hall of Fame coach Bob Hiegert and was a key member of the team's pitching staff during the magical 1984 season. Cocheu helped CSUN to a then team-record 46 victories including a memorable 8-2 run through the postseason to capture the national crown. Â

On the mound, Cocheu would make 22 appearances in 1984, posting a spotless 2-0 record, 13 strikeouts and a 4.96 ERA in over 32 innings of work. Cocheu also racked up a team-leading three saves that season.
After his playing days, Cocheu returned to CSUN and spent the 1986 season as an assistant coach to the Matadors under head coach Terry Craven.Â

Cocheu along with the entire 1984 team become the second Matador baseball team to be inducted into the Matador Hall of Fame in 2018.
