CSUN Defeats UCLA 2-1 in Exhibition On the Road
8/16/2025 12:34:00 AM | Men's Soccer
WESTWOOD, Calif --- CSUN Men's Soccer defeated the UCLA Bruins, 2-1, in an exhibition match Friday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Yart Van Lieshout scored the game winner putting CSUN ahead with just a few minutes left to play in the second half.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The matchup was a back-and-forth gritty contest with scraps for possession and hard fouls from both teams. UCLA got an early score, a goal in the sixth minute by Sergi Solans to put the Bruins up 1-0, but CSUN wasn't going to go down without a fight.
Â
A fast pace on both sides made it a contentious game with neither team having most of the possession time.
Â
A goal in the 26th minute by Luke Lawrence tied the game at one apiece. A laser from just above the left side of the box evened the scoring and put all the momentum on the side of the Matadors.
Â
Both teams went into intermission with the score tied 1-1.
Â
In the second half, the game was deadlocked at one on both sides. The contest was feisty, with a couple yellow cards on both sides.
Â
In the 86th minute, CSUN threatened with a corner kick to try and pull ahead late. And pull ahead they did. The Matadors attempted a header that caromed off the goalkeeper, leaving Van Lieshout with a chance to put it in the net off the rebound. Off the defenders hand the initial shot went, and the sophomore from the Netherlands lasered a ball that found the left bottom corner of the net to make it 2-1 game.
Â
Both teams played a scoreless extra 30 minutes, as the CSUN defense locked down the Bruins and kept it a 2-1 game, giving CSUN the win in Westwood.
Â
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
"Tonight was a great test and a great result for our team right before the real season begins in Tulsa next week."
