CSUN Opens 2025 Season with Scoreless Draw Against Tulsa
8/21/2025 8:24:00 PM | Men's Soccer
TULSA, Okla. --- CSUN Men's Soccer earned a hard-fought scoreless draw with the Tulsa Hurricanes in the 2025 season opener at Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium Thursday night. Goalkeeper Dorian Drucks was masterful in goal with a career-high seven saves in the match.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half saw a contested match with both teams feeling each other out in the early going. Tulsa played a gritty brand of soccer, committing seven fouls in the first 45 minutes.
Â
The Hurricanes were the aggressor on offense as well, as they had four shots with all of them being on goal. Drucks did a tremendous job in the net, saving close call after close call, keeping it a scoreless game through one half.Â
Â
Tulsa's Gus Hovius was the leader of the pack, striking two shots on goal, one including a bottom right shot at the 33rd minute on the net as Drucks dove for the save.
Â
Both teams had contrasting play styles, with the Matadors trying to attack by pushing the ball forward, while Tulsa was moving more side to side. Needless to say, defense was the story. Tulsa had three corner kicks, failing to deliver against the CSUN defenders.Â
Â
2ND HALFÂ
Tulsa came out of the break controlling most of the possession. Even with the pressure from their opponents, the Matadors earned their first corner of the match five minutes into the second half. However, CSUN couldn't capitalize.
Â
Tulsa continued to play aggressive, as the Hurricanes committed its 10th foul in the 60th minute. The Hurricanes ended the game with 13 in total.
Â
In the 62nd minute, Justin Sosa struck a ball that hit the Tulsa keeper in the bottom right of the net, a save for the Hurricanes that kept the score 0-0
Â
Gus Hovius was a key contributor for the Hurricanes. He had three shots on goal in the match, but Drucks was there to stop it all. Tulsa led CSUN on total shots (11-4), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (5-3).Â
Â
In the 76th minute, Yart Van Lieshout sailed wide on one of CSUN's stronger chances in the game.
Â
Just two minutes later, a shot by Tulsa's Gyuwon Chong at the top of the box landed in hands of Drucks near the bottom center of the goal, another close call that Drucks saved. Tulsa would end the game with two more shots but failed to get a goal on the board.Â
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
"We  fought hard to come away with a tie. We weren't sharp with the ball, and we were often a step late in closing down. When you turn the ball over as much as we did, you're going to wear down physically. It's inevitable. That said, Dorian Drucks was definitely our player of the match. He kept us in it."
Â
UP NEXT
CSUN will make the short trip to Oral Roberts, which also plays in Tulsa. The matchup with the Golden Eagles will be at Case Soccer Complex and kicks-off at 5:00 p.m. PT.Â
