CSUN's Yoshi Rubalcava Claims All-Big West Preseason Honors

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer's senior midfielder Yoshi Rubalcava was placed on the 11-member Big West Preseason Coaches' Team on Thursday, as announced by the league office.Â
Originally from El Paso, Texas, Rubalcava is coming off a career junior season in 2024 where she received an All-Big West Honorable Mention. Rubalcava topped the Matadors and ranked seventh in the Big West in goals with five while she posted 12 points, 29 shots, 11 shots on goal and two assists over 19 total matches including 17 starts. Two of her five goals on the campaign went for game winners and four were scored against Big West competition.Â

Prior to last season's career year, Rubalcava had scored one goal and registered two points over her first 30 games with the Matadors. The All-Big West Preseason Team selection is the first of her collegiate career.Â
In the 2025 Big West Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll, CSUN was picked to finish tied for ninth place in the league with Cal State Bakersfield. The Matadors received 27 points in the poll. Hawai'i was selected as the favorite to win the Big West, finishing with six first-place votes and 88 points while UC Santa Barbara was second with three first-place votes and 84 points. UC Irvine was third with a first-place vote and 81 points and Long Beach State took fourth with a first-place vote and 74 points. In fifth was Cal State Fullerton (73 points) followed by Cal Poly (53 points), UC San Diego (42 points) and UC Davis (37 points). Below CSUN and CSUB was UC Riverside with 19 points.Â
The Matadors defied preseason expectations last season, finishing in seventh place after they were selected to finish last in the Big West. Under the direction of first-year head coach Gina Brewer, CSUN would go 5-11-3 overall and 3-3-4 in Big West play while finishing just one game back of the final conference tournament postseason spot. The Matadors posted a four-game win improvement from the year before while registering their most conference wins and conference points (12) since the 2019 season.Â
