NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — CSUN men's soccer remains unbeaten to start the season, grinding out a 0-0 draw against the Seattle University Redhawks on Thursday night at Matador Soccer Field.
The Matadors (2-0-2) controlled much of the possession, holding 52 percent of the ball and generating eight shots, but couldn't find the finishing touch against a Seattle defense that played the final 22 minutes with 10 men after a red card to Edgar Leon.
Midfielder Justin Sosa led CSUN with six shots, including a pair of attempts in the closing minutes that pushed the Redhawks' back line but failed to beat goalkeeper Charlie Lanphier, who finished with one save.
CSUN goalkeeper Dorian Drucks came up with four stops to secure his fourth shutout of the year, including key saves in the 73rd and 82nd minutes to preserve the result.
The match was physical throughout, with the teams combining for 31 fouls and nine yellow cards. CSUN was whistled for seven cautions, while Seattle saw Leon sent off in the 68th minute.
At around the 80' minute mark, an offside was ruled against CSUN as Zion Wagoner slotted a shot into the back of the net. The goal was initially ruled offside and upheld by video-assistance review.
Despite the stalemate, the Matadors extended their unbeaten run to four games to open the season.
NOTES OF THE GAME
- Sosa's six shots now put him first on the leaderboard of Matador shots on the season with 10 so far in 2025.
- CSUN's 2-0-2 start is the best since 2022 where the Matadors began 3-0-1
- Drucks is yet to allow a goal to start this season.
- Jake Shaked and Sebastien Fuentes accounted for the other Matador shots.
- Both teams tallied eight shots.
- This is the first ever tie between both teams.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
Seattle University is a team full of good college athletes. The game means a lot to everybody. They want to do well, and so do we. In order to stop a team you've got to be physical. They did a very good job of being physical. There were some sloppy plays but every player was trying to get their space, and we saw fouls on both sides. I thought we were outstanding on set-piece defense tonight. Last year they scored three on us and today we held them to no goals, so I thought we did fabulous in that area. I thought Dorian [Drucks] did fine tonight. A good goalkeeper keeps the game quiet and he did just that.
