NORTHRIDGE, Calif --- The CSUN women's basketball team (6-9, 2-4 Big West) fell to the Cal State Fullerton Titans (8-8, 4-2 Big West), 73-58 Saturday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena. A strong second quarter by the Titans made CSUN fight behind for much of the game, as Fullerton came up with the win despite a strong fourth quarter from the Matadors.
CSUN was led by Saray White, who had a career-high 26 points. Jite Gbemuotor added 16 as well to go along with 14 rebounds. Gbemuotor in two games this week had back-to-back double-doubles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a seesaw battle in the first quarter with no team pulling away. Fullerton got out to an early 7-3 run before Gbemuotor drained a layup on an assist from Erika Aspajo. The Titans amassed eight steals in the first, as CSUN's 16 points came on a balanced scoring attack that saw multiple players find the bottom of the net.
In the second quarter, a stifling Fullerton defense kept the Matadors to only four points. Meanwhile the Titans' offense started to put their foot on the gas. Fullerton scored 23 points in the second, as it was 7-20 from the field, and 3-6 from behind the three-point line. CSUF also earned points from the charity stripe sinking 6-8 free-throws. The score was 39-18 heading into the break.
SECOND HALF
In the third quarter, CSUN came out of the break firing, jumping out to a 7-2 run capped off by a White three-pointer at the 8:06 mark which trimmed the lead to 16. Fullerton responded with an 8-2 run of its own to push the lead to 22. After a made CSUN free throw, White drained a shot from downtown with 5:09 left to play in the third as the Matadors kept fighting. Fullerton then went on another run, this time of the 10-2 variety, pushing the lead to 27 at 59-33. CSUN did end the third on a mini 5-1 run, making the score 60-38 heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was by far CSUN's best quarter yet, as the Matadors kept climbing until the very end. To begin the fourth, the Matadors went on their biggest run of the game. They went on a 16-6 run capped off by a Mariona Cos-Morales three-pointer to cut the lead to 12 with 4:44 left as the scoreboard read 66-54. White had seven points in that run alone, and it caused Fullerton to use a timeout. However, after the huddle the Titans regrouped and were able to hold onto their lead, responding with a 5-0 run. The time was not on the Matadors side as CSUN fell short in its comeback.

CSUN will stay home to take on UC San Diego this Thursday, January 15. The game will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
