CSUN Extends Win Streak to Three with 4-2 Win at UC Irvine
10/10/2026 10:02:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The win is CSUN's first road victory against UC Irvine since the 2016 season.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors earned two corner kicks along with a shot on goal from Canister to open the match. Mauldin did her best to keep UCI out of the net in the early going, stopping a shot from Fiona Shin as the game was deadlocked at 0-0 for nearly 20 minutes. CSUN's pressure on the offensive end would lead to a costly UCI foul in its own box. Awarded a penalty kick, CSUN called upon Canister who calmly hit the back of the net through goalkeeper Savannah Arruda to put the Matadors ahead 1-0. CSUN held UC Irvine without a shot over the final 34-plus minutes of the first half while withstanding four total corner kicks to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.Â
After the Anteaters picked up a pair of shots to open the second half, the Matadors doubled their lead in the 54th minute, set up by a long run from Canister. The senior led the Matador drive up the middle of the field as she delivered a long pass in front of a streaking Lopez-Angel. From there, Lopez-Angel dribbled and found room from the corner of the box before sending a high shot into the goal for a 2-0 lead. The Anteaters quickly responded less than four minutes later when Mimi Yamamoto found Shin for a header, cutting the Matador advantage to one.Â

CSUN though was not done on the offensive end. The Matadors would answer UCI's goal with another strike just 34 seconds later. CSUN created the scoring chance after a series of touches close to the attacking third. Lopez-Angel would gather possession after a deflection and finish from near the 18 yard line to extend to a 3-1 lead. The Anteaters appeared to find a goal in the 74th minute when Yamamoto hit the net in a scramble at the net. However, a video reviewed showed Yamamoto committed a handball, negating the goal. Less than two minutes later, CSUN reclaimed momentum with an insurance goal off the foot of Monroy. The scoring play came after a series of Matador touches as Lopez-Angel crossed the ball back to the top of the right corner of the box where Monroy bent the ball inside the far post to push the lead to 4-1. Shin brought UCI a bit closer in the 89th minute with her second goal of the night, but it was not enough to make up the gap.Â

ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We are so excited for the team to get three tough away wins in a row. KK (Claiborne) did a fantastic job drawing the penalty that Jordyn stepped up and put away. Ariana scored two fantastic goals followed up by Michelle's goal, which was one of the best goals you'll see. We still are wanting to improve defensively and get that shutout, but we are so proud of the whole team overall!"
