NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer played to a 1-1 tie with Cal Poly on Wednesday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Yasmin Azar scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season early in the match. On defense, goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin recorded six saves to help earn the Matadors a point in the Big West standings.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a battle of the Big West regular season champion and the Big West tournament champion from last season, the Matadors and Mustangs battled in a seesaw matchup over 90 minutes of action. Each side would collect 14 shots in the match while the teams combined to commit 27 fouls.Â
CSUN would come out fast in the early moments as Azar hit the crossbar just 33 seconds into the contest. Azar received another shot at the net after the Mustangs committed a handball in its own box at the 5:28 mark of the first half. The Matadors turned to Azar to take the penalty kick and the junior calmly found the left corner of the net, past a diving Shannon Porubski. Playing from behind, the Mustangs went to work on the offensive end looking for the equalizer. Beginning in the ninth minute of action, Cal Poly earned five corner kicks, leading to the tying goal in the 26th minute. Off the set piece, Miah Thomas found a leaping Ruby Casey who headed the ball in from less than 10 yards out.Â
Â
The Matadors nearly went ahead late in the first half as Jordyn Canister found room in front of the goal, but her shot on the door step went high. Michelle Monroy took the final shot of the first half with her attempt going wide right.Â
After CSUN led 8-5 in the shot count in the first half, the Mustangs returned the favor by leading 9-6 in the second period. Cal Poly generated five shots on frame in the second half, but CSUN's Mauldin would be there each time to deny a go-ahead goal. Mauldin made a crucial stop in the 76th minute after a CSUN turnover in the Mustangs' attacking third. Kate Nunes went one-on-on against Mauldin before the Matador netminder made a timely save. Thomas took the final attempt of the match in the final seconds, which Mauldin promptly sent away as time expired.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"Our goal was a shutout. We're really working hard to try to get that, so conceding the one goal was frustrating. Overall, we knew this was going to be a very tough opponent. Obviously, we were the regular season champion last year, they were the Big West tournament champions, so we tied last year and we tied them again this year, which shows just how close the two teams are from each other. Proud of the team and their defensive effort, proud of Hayden and those saves. I don't think it's the last time we'll be seeing them. Hopefully we'll see them in Big West tournament play."
