HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN came out firing in the opening set, claiming six of the first seven points, highlighted by kills from Bazylevych, Brockway, Audrey Nuckols and Iye Okolo. CBU rallied to within 7-4, but CSUN answered with a 5-0 to extend the margin to 12-4 advantage. The Matadors, who hit .364 in the opening frame and held the Lancers to a .207 attack percentage, would lead by as many as nine before closing out a 25-15 win on a Brockway ace.
CBU controlled much of the second set, but CSUN stayed within striking distance throughout. The Matadors opened with a 3-1 and would lead by four at 7-3 following a Brockway kill. The Lancers rallied back to take a 10-9 lead and the set remained tight, with six ties and five lead changes, before CBU ultimately built a 16-13 advantage. Trailing 19-14, CSUN engineered a 4-1 run to close to within one at 20-19, but California Baptist held on, scoring five of the final eight points to even the match at one set apiece.
Looking to maintain its momentum, CBU built an early 6-2 lead, and the Matadors still trailed by three at 10-7. A Bazylevych kill sparked a 7-5 CSUN run that closed the gap to 15-14. After the Lancers built a 20-16 advantage, CSUN rallied behind a 7-1 run as another Brockway kill put the Matadors up 23-21. The teams traded points all the way to 24-24 before Bazylevych put CSUN in front 25-24. A Lancer attack error ended the set, giving CSUN a 2-1 match lead after a 26-24 victory.
CSUN seized control early in the fourth set despite falling behind 3-0. The Matadors tied the frame at 4-4 behind a Sentes service ace and a Kolar kill, then took a 7-5 lead after a pair of California Baptist errors and a Kolar-Turgeon block. The Lancers pulled even at 10-10, but CSUN responded with a decisive 9-1 run. Nuckols and Okolo recorded key kills, while Turgeon and Nuckols contributed blocks as the Matadors built a 19-11 advantage. Brockway and Okolo continued the attack late, and Nuckols served an ace to put CSUN ahead 23-13. Kolar followed with a kill, and Turgeon and Bazylevych teamed up for a block to close out the 25-13 set and the four-set win.
