CSUN Drops Final Reggie Smith Invite Matchup Against San Diego, 4-2

SAN DIEGO,  Calif. --- The CSUN softball team fell to the University of San Diego Toreros, 4-2 Sunday afternoon at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex in the final game of the Reggie Smith Invitational. The Matadors scored twice in the second inning, but San Diego answered with three runs in the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth to secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN capitalized on a Toreros error to take an early lead. Raegan Jackson opened the second inning with a double to left and later scored when Savannah Simons reached on a dropped popup at first base. Simons then stole second and came home on Mackenzie Kila's two-out RBI single to right, giving the Matadors a 2-0 advantage. Both runs were unearned.

San Diego broke through in the fourth. Hailey Mulligan doubled and Mallory Axline followed with an RBI triple down the left-field line to cut the deficit in half. Janae Combs tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and Kaitlyn Wynia delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to put the Toreros in front 3-2.

The Toreros tacked on another run in the sixth on a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 4-2.

Isabella Valdez led the Matadors at the plate as she registered two hits on the day.

NOTES OF THE GAME
CSUN will kick off its first homestand and Big West play on Friday, March 6 against UC Riverside. CSUN opens a three-game series with a doubleheader with first pitch of the first game commencing at 1:00 p.m. and the second game beginning at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
