Matthew Thomas Claims Big West Field Player of the Week Honors

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball's junior outfielder Matthew Thomas earned his first career Big West Field Player of the Week honor on Monday, as announced by the league office.Â
A native of Garden Grove, Thomas was impressive at the plate through a four-game week for the Matadors where he slashed .538/.647/1.615. In addition to hitting six extra base hits, Thomas hammered four home runs while adding nine runs, seven hits, five RBI and two doubles.Â

Thomas began the week with multi-home run performance in a come-from-behind 7-5 win at California Baptist last Tuesday. Belting two solo homers in the contest, Thomas scored three times to help lead the comeback charge as CSUN trailed by a 5-2 margin in the contest.Â
Last weekend at Robert J. Hiegert Field, Thomas kept up his hitting ways by going 5-for-10 with six runs scored in CSUN's series with Western Michigan. After doubling and scoring in the series opener, Thomas smacked a solo homer while going 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored in an 11-1 victory over the Broncos on Saturday. Thomas wrapped up the series by stroking another solo home run in a two-hit performance on Sunday.Â
A transfer from Cal, Thomas has enjoyed a fast start to his Matador career. Through 11 games this season, Thomas is hitting .359 with a Big West-leading 16 runs scored and 1.026 slugging percentage. He also shares the Big West lead in home runs with teammate Matthew Pena at six. Out of his 14 hits this season, Thomas has already produced 13 extra base hits.Â
Thomas is the first Matador to earn the Big West Field Player of the Week award since Kevin Fitzer during the 2024 season.Â
The Matadors return to action on Tuesday, hosting Michigan at Robert J. Hiegert Field at 5 p.m. Ghizal Hasan will be on the call on ESPN+.Â
