DAVIS, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team won both games of a doubleheader, and therefore the series against UC Davis Monday afternoon at La Rue Field. In game one, CSUN won 8-6Â and followed with a 7-1 rout in game two. Raegan Jackson had four RBIs over the two games. Ta'Tiannah Wright had two RBIs in game one. Mackenzie Kila had two RBIs in game two. Malia Williams pitched a complete game in game two.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
After a scoreless inning and a half from both teams, UC Davis struck first in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, Kaitlyn Tso gave up a walk and the runner on second scored in the process, making it a 2-0 game on a defensive lapse by the Matadors. The Aggies then took advantage of a CSUN fielding error, taking a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Â
CSUN wasted no time striking back. Savannah Simons was hit by a pitch to open the top of the third inning. Vanessa Perez brought her home with a loud triple to left center, putting CSUN on the board at 3-1. A passed ball would bring Perez home, pulling CSUN within 3-2.Â
Â
The Aggies did add more in the bottom half of the frame. With the bases loaded, Annika Norquist doubled down the right field line and two runs scored, making it a 5-2 ballgame.Â
Â
The Matadors didn't let the three run lead get to them. Madie Hernandez singled to start the inning. Jordan Ramirez doubled down the right field line and Hernandez came all the way around from first to score to make it 5-3.Â
Â
After an out, Mackenzie Kila was hit by a pitch and Perez singled to load the bases. Amber Rivas was hit by a pitch as well, bringing home the runner from third, making it a 5-4 game.Â
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, CSUN pulled off a triple play to end the threat. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Simons grabbed a line drive and quickly touched the third base bag for the second out. Simons then began a 5-2-1-2-5 putout of the runner at second base, completing the triple play.
Â
In the top of the fifth, the Matadors took the lead. Madison Okano singled to left field to kick off a rally. Isabella Hiner followed with a single of her own. The next batter, Ta'Tiannah Wright was inserted as a pinch hitter. She came through as needed, Wright singled to right center in between both fielders and both runners on base scored. It was now 6-5 CSUN's advantage.
Â
Flash forward to the sixth inning and the Matadors added on. Perez hit a double to right field, putting a runner in scoring position for senior Raegan Jackson. Jackson had the biggest of the day for the Matadors. She hit a ball just over the left fielder's head and wall for a two-run home run, giving CSUN a three run lead at 8-5.Â
Â
The Matador pitching staff held the Aggies in check the rest of the game. UC Davis added one in the ninth, but could not make up the deficit as CSUN earned the win in the first game of the doubleheader.
Â
GAME TWO
CSUN wasted no time scoring the first run of the game in the top of the first. Kila got things going with a leadoff walk. She ended up stealing second base. Perez walked as well but KIla was picked off as both runners went for the double steal. With one out, Rivas doubled to center and Perez scored, 1-0 CSUN.
Â
The Aggies answered back in the bottom half. After an infield single, and a ground out advanced the runner, Alyssa Dethlefson hit a ground rule double and the runner scored to even it up at one apiece.Â
Â
In the top of the third, CSUN broke the tie. After Kila reached on an error, Perez singled through the right side to put runners on the corners with nobody out. After a foul out, Perez stole second base and Kila scored on the errant throw that tried to get Perez out, making it 2-1. Jackson then singled to center field and Perez scored, 3-1 Matador lead.
Â
It would remain 3-1 until the top of the sixth. Perseus Yanez singled to start the frame. After two outs, Simons got hit by a pitch. Kila then continued to have herself a day. She tripled to right center field and brought two runs home to make it 5-1. The next batter Perez singled to the shortstop to push the lead to 6-1 in favor of the Matadors.
Â
In the top of seventh, Jackson put the game out of reach. She hit a towering fly ball over the left field wall for her second home run of the day to make it 7-1.Â
Â
"Being able to perform for my team on both sides of the ball is huge." Jackson said. " For us to be able to deliver and perform against Davis is big. They're a well-rounded team that has been having success. This weekend our goals were to really dial in on what our goals are as a team and we had a little game going on within us to keep us focused on one pitch at a time. We have confidence that we can keep leaning and trusting each other even when we're not at our best. We've just got to keep working"Â
Â
Williams capped off her great pitching start by retiring three out of four batters to end the game.
Â
"Today felt great." Williams said. "This is the type of win that turns a season around. Knowing that my teammates had my back defensively was a good feeling. Getting these wins gives us a ton of confidence."
NOTES OF THE GAMES
"Game one today was huge, we know we needed the win. We rode Malia because she has the hot hand and she shut it down for us. In game two we asked how she was feeling and she wanted the ball. There was no doubt in her mind. She put us on her back and that was exactly what we needed. She killed it. Also, we put up 21 hits today in the two games. Our two-out hitting was phenomenal all day. Kila in the leadoff spot this weekend set the tone and Raegan's home runs were clutch. Our offense controlled the game and we put pressure on their defense almost every inning. Both wins today were team wins and I'm really proud of this group."
