NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---Â The CSUN softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader to the UC San Diego Tritons Friday at Matador Diamond. CSUN was defeated 6-1 in game one and 12-5 in game two. Jordan Ramirez had an RBI in game one. Madison Okano and Isabella Hiner each had two RBIs in game two. Vanessa Perez drove in a run as well.
Â
GAME ONE
In the bottom of the second, the Matadors struck first. With one out, Amber Rivas and Hiner had back-to-back singles. The next batter, Ramirez singled to right field and Rivas scored, making it a 1-0 CSUN lead at the end of two innings.Â
Â
In the next half inning, the Tritons struck back. The Big West home runs leader, Maalia Cherry slugged a two-run home run to deep center to put the Tritons on top 2-1. The next batter, Zara Wasserman, contributed to back-to-back homers as she hit one over the left field wall to make it 3-1. UCSD was not done as Gianna Ioja hit UCSD's third consecutive home run to put the Tritons up 4-1.
Â
In the top of the fifth, UCSD added more to its total. Marley Espiau doubled with two runners on to bring a fifth run across the plate. Cherry then added another RBI with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 6-1, which would turn out to be the final score.Â
Â
GAME TWO
UCSD had a big inning to start off the game. Four RBI singles and two fielder's choices accounted for six runs for the Tritons in the first.Â
Â
In the bottom of the third, CSUN cut the lead in half. Perez singled with two runners on to score the first run of the game for the Matadors. Okano then singled up the middle and plated the two runners on base to make it a 6-3 game.
Â
After back-to-back walks, Hiner singled through the shortstop and two more runs scored to make it 6-5.
Despite the momentum shift, UC San Diego's pitching settled in. Tritons reliever Brooke Settembro held CSUN scoreless over the final 4.1 innings, allowing just four hits while striking out three.
Â
The Tritons added insurance runs late, scoring three in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh to pull away. Key hits included an RBI single from Espiau, an RBI triple by Haley Garcia, and multiple run-scoring plays in the seventh to extend the lead to 12-5.
